Did we not see this one before?
It sure would seem that way. Especially following last year’s ‘BLACKKKLANSMAN’ and ‘GREEN BOOK’.
But ‘THE BEST OF ENEMIES’ stands on its own two feet. And just as the other two films is also inspired by true events.
The setting here is Durham, NC circa 1971.
The town is still very much segregated and making no bones about it.
Against that backdrop racist gas station operator C.P. Ellis also serves as leader of the local chapter of the Klan which is still in recruiting mode. He is played by Sam Rockwell.
On the other side of the tracks is outspoken civil rights activist Ann Atwater played to the hilt by Taraji P. Henson. She is the only real force to stand up to the KKK’s local evil of just about everything.
And when the ‘black’ elementary school is severely damaged by a fire she sets all out for school integration—to educate the kids all under one roof.
But how to get it done?
Let’s just say that these two opposed personalities agree to co-chair a two week-long community meeting to deal with the problem, not to mention a court-ordered school desegregation decree.
You guessed it: through this volatile period of adjustment Atwater and Ellis ignite a chemistry for the good which would change BOTH of their lives for the better.
So can a civil rights activist actually become friends with a KKK leader?
It happened in Durham!
The film is based on the book ‘The Best Of Enemies: Race And Redemption In The New South’ by Osha Gray Davidson.
And while it’s not quite on par with the aforementioned two films, it is still a worthy candidate for a trip to your local MegaPlex.
‘THE BEST OF ENEMIES’ opens this weekend in ‘wide’ release.

And speaking of the Kennedys, let’s dig up Ted and Kill Him Again. Bussing? Yeah, that worked out well. Pretending that you can send your children to the KCSD for an education and expect them to matriculate with a degree commensurate with schools in Johnson County is prima facie evidence that you are on the glass pipe.
But Harvard Blacks want separate but equal graduation ceremonies. “Whites Not Allowed” is becoming the new, accepted Plessy V. Ferguson 2019 sine qua non in the new “WOKE” American zeitgeist.
Whitey just might be all for it.
If we pretend that education for all races today, was improved by that piece of murdering shit Ted Kennedy, than we can certainly believe that a return to segregation might be beneficial for all. Makes sense to me.

C’mon man, how many times do we have to re live the 1960’s? Baby Boomers are so narcissistic. Ever since the late ’80’s every other freaking movie is about this period of time. Get over yourselves!
A bit lengthy, but I thought it gave a balanced account of what likely transpired in Durham, NC, circa 1971. The KKK leader is actually a sympathetic figure, as he probably was when he was balancing his evolving feelings with the his commitment to the Klan. The African American characters also had plenty of flaws. Overall, a good movie that shows how communication and openness can sometimes overcome the past.
