New Jack City: Local TV Hits Football Fork In The Road

Who is taking the biggest hit due to the Chiefs missing out on the Super Bowl?

It’s got to be Kansas City’s local television stations.

You just know that every local outlet would have aired its own Chiefs specials prior to the big game.

And each one of those specials would have been supported by expensive advertising and/or sponsorship dollars.

Let’s look at our local CBS affiliate KCTV that is actually carrying the Super Bowl.

Had the Chiefs made it to the big game I would be willing to bet that practically the entire Sunday schedule on Channel 5 prior to actual starting time would have been made up of special Super Bowl and Chiefs programming—all featuring pricy local ad spots, of course.

And think about the kind of money those local ad buys adjacent to or airing during the game would have brought.

According to one local media executive those commercials could have sold for (possibly) as much as $50,000.- at the high end.

Alas that was not to be, as the Super Bowl is being played without the participation of the so-called Chiefs Kingdom and local ad spots may now only bring about half of that or less. Perhaps close to $30,000.

Yet even without the Chiefs’ participation the big game, it will still be pretty much a winner for advertisers as the total share of audience will be immense—especially on a cost per thousand basis.

And THIS event will definitely be watched LIVE, not on DVR!

In other words,  no fast-forwarding of commercials so still a great deal all the way around.

But just imagine if the Chiefs had been  part of it……

It would’ve been champagne all around in local media circles.

And maybe even beer and pizza for the local newspaper.

The Puppy Bowl would have been better TV viewing. Good gawd that was awful.

Can you imagine what the Scribe would have had to say?

Total suck fest and Craig would have undoubtedly lost however many hundred dollars (which the way things were going for him he could ill afford).

He would have RAILED about what crappy the game was. Noted correctly that the Rams were cursed because not way they belonged in that Super Bowl AND that the Saints would have and should have won.

Naturally, he would have also bemoaned the Chiefs for blowing their chance to – not just be ion it – but likely winning it.

In other words, he’d still be rolling over in his six-months old grave!

I saw a headline that said the NFL got the Superbowl they deserved. I think that puts a pretty good bow on it.

CG didn’t miss a damn thing this year. Cheers to The Scribe.

I’m sure he’s out there somewhere, giving you a friendly nod back…

He always was appreciative of the comments section regulars…uh, the ones who didn’t accuse him of being a snitch, that is!
