Hearne: The Price is Right When it Comes to Local News

extortion, newspaper article text

The price of tea in China?

Dunno, but I can tell you that I pay about $120 a  year for a seven days a week print subscription to the Kansas City Star.

Which as it turns out – I just learned – is less than KCC movie and travel scribe Jack Poessiger pays every six months for his subscription.

“I’m paying about $155 every six months,” Poessiger says. “But I just got a notification that on my auto renew plan that rate is about to go up to around $230.”

Which will make Poessiger’s newspaper bill more double what I pay.

“How did you get your rate down so low?” he asked.

Well, I  just set the bar to the level I was willing pay and let the Star come to me.

Former Star reporter-turned-blogger Jim Fitzpatrick got his panties in a bunch last spring and beseeched his followers to cancel their subscriptions to his former employer.

“I never thought I would say this, but as of today I’m going to recommend that people stop taking the print edition of The Kansas City Star,” Fitzpatrick began.

But do as Fitz says, not as he does.

“As a KC Star retiree, I get an incredible deal on the print product — $10.74 a month — and will continue being a print subscriber unless The Star reneges on that commitment.”

As for the unwashed…

“Intentionally, McClatchy and The Star have raised print-product prices to unsustainable levels,” Fitzpatrick continued. “Oh, you can get a start-up deal on the daily paper for $33.19 for the first four weeks and $23.20 for the ensuing four weeks, but once they get you into their clutches, they want as much as $80 a month for the privilege of continuing home delivery seven days a week.”

That’s nearly a grand a year!

My advice to Man Jack and the rest of you out there (are you listening Stomps?):

Cancel your auto renews and tell them what you’re willing to pay.

After all, just as you should get what you pay for, you may as well pay for what you’re getting.

Seems fair, right?

Here’s the deal Jim, if they were PAYING YOU $10.74 a month to read the vaccuous, inane, “Hate Whitey”, self gelding encouragements from our Progressive bettors, guiding us towards a ride on the AOC unicorn, you would still be euchered out of some coin of the realm. Me, I think you time is more valuable than you are currently selling it.

Especially considering that time is short!

We only have 11 years and 11 1/2 months left!!!

If you really must read the Red Star, get an online subscription to your library and read it for FREE.
