Drunken expedition, anyone?
The Chiefs have coined a new term for drunken idiots: “core fans.”
That’s how Chiefs prez Mark Donovan characterized the team’s infamous, hardcore tailgaters in referencing a new parking area being set aside for younger, cleaner-cut football fans. Folks who come to the stadium to watch the game, rather than get schnockered in the parking lot.
It’s an offshoot of a new NFL-encouraged policy that says fans should either head into the stadium after kickoff or leave the parking lot if they don’t have tickets.
That after a Chiefs fan got beaten to death by drunken tailgaters five years back.
What a novel idea.
Instead of allowing fans to get drunk on their asses and wobble home afterwards, encourage them to stay home unless they have tickets.
Then again, there’s a reason the Chiefs want to squeeze in as many drunken fans without tickets as possible.
Because they collect $60 per car in parking fees on game days.
That’s half a million bucks a game if 8,000 cars show up.
Look, anybody who doesn’t know how wasted Chiefs fans get hasn’t been to a game in 20 years.
And last year the Chiefs began opening the floodgates to tailgaters at 6:30 am, nearly four hours prior to letting fans into the stadium, six hours before noon kickoffs and nine hours for 3 pm games.
Which, forgive me for being presumptuous, is inviting trouble.
Several years back police did the unthinkable and set up DUI checkpoints for cars exiting the stadium after a game. Net result: a logistical nightmare that caused a front page traffic jam yielding thousands of complaints.
And that was that.
And while the Chiefs boast of “a responsible drinking and positive fan behavior” policy, encouraging them to tailgate for more than eight hours before kickoff smacks of the exact opposite.
With hundreds of thousands (to millions) of dollars in parking revenues on the line, let’s see how long it takes before the Chiefs fold on the new get-into-the-game-after-kickoff policy.

Conjuring up that old case in which the drunk was beaten to death right out there in the Arrowhead parking lot: How exactly does the perp, Joshua T. Bradley, get off with probation (not a day served) for pleading guilty to a first degree manslaughter charge (particularly when witnesses said the slimeball continued to beat the hell out the drunk even when he was unconscious on the ground)? Leaving aside the whole issue of the incompetent, chicken$hit Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, I must say that manslaughter sure ain’t what it used to be. God, how I hate the 21st Century.

Josh Bradley should be in prison. It’s a grave injustice that he’s not.
Very simple solution to the problem and hard to believe the higher ups at 1 Arrowhead Drive have not thought of this.
30 years of hardcore tailgating and NOW it’s a problem. Give me a freaking break. That poor bastard got beat to death by moron fans, and the Chiefs did nothing in response. As noted in the story, they even opened the gates to the parking lots EARLIER. In the age where NFL attendance and tv viewership is trending down, it amazes me how the Chiefs can continue to piss in the face of their “core” fans. (read: Independence and Raytown white trash). Oh well, the drunken brawls and collections of Rhodes Scholars doing elbow drops through flaming tables will have to remain in the trailer parks.

This new policy wouldn’t have done a damn thing for the guy that got killed 5 years back. This will be a short lived policy as it will become a nightmare to actually enforce. What do you do about the guy that comes out after the 3rd quarter because the game sucks? How do you “force” him to leave if he isn’t the one that’s driving? He can’t go back into the game. What do you do with him? Now tailgating is a problem? Not 10, 20 or 30 years ago? Just now? What do you do about the RV’s? Will they knock on doors to make sure nobody has stayed inside to watch the game? This is just stupid.
Jim, you are 100% correct. It’s beyond stupid. But it’s typical Chiefs. Hell, I see worse behavior by drunken white trash INSIDE the stadium! I’ve seen opposing fans thrown into full urinals. I’ve seen them physically assaulted, unprovoked. I saw one Chiefs fan whip out his junk and piss on a Broncos fan sitting in front of him. I’ve seen no less thatn 8 occurances of drunken fans verbally berating opposing fans who were just either standing in line at the concession stands, or walk though the concourses. It’s disgusting. Camarohead is a cesspool, and shutting down tailgating isn’t going to fix the problem.

How are they going to enforce it. Arrests? Probably tickets, which then becomes a revenue for the city.
Well, they could require people to show their tickets before allowing them into the parking area, I guess.
But if people knew they had to leave at noon, says, then drive home hammered and be stuck listening to the first quarter or half on the radio, would they even go in the first place?
I will agree that Arrowhead has a certain amount of Independence & Raytown do have a high percentage of White Trash, but lets’ not count out the Liberty, Blue Springs and Lees Summit White Trash. Maybe not as high a percentage. Then you got your Kansas White Trash, ah yes you do….. Olathe, Merriam and north OP. White Trash Camero driving losers..
