Tough question, given the team’s likely calibre of play…
It’s hard to believe our Kansas City Royals were world champs just three seasons back. After in 2014 the they backed into the playoffs, got hot and went to a World Series only to lose late in game 7.
Can KC baseball fans live off that for decades again?
It’s true after a team wins a title they often fall off, but you’d think the ownership would at least try and keep things rolling and be a playoff contender, right?
So what did KC do to insure a future of good baseball here?
Not much.
We did sign Alex Gordon to a long term zillion dollar contract. Unfortunately, while today he’s still a very good outfielder he’s one of baseball’s worst hitters in a starting position player role (around .200 with no power).
The Royals did go out and get Ian Kennedy to help the pitching staff – oh joy.
And we did hold onto Eric Hosmer, Moose and crew who were already under contract to show off our champs for a couple seasons, even though the Royals were struggling to be a .500 team and never really were in contention.
You know the drill.
Adios now to any hopes for post season play for years or decades to come.
Remember what happened post 1985?
Now the good news:
KC finally won its first game this season hammering the Tigers 1-0 behind Jakob Junis perhaps the one bright spot in our pitching rotation this year. Danny Duffy got hammered in the home opener with a truck load of homers and now starts with a ll.25 ERA.
But don’t worry, it’s early right?
Ah, and the hitting…
We had but ONE home run early on by Lucas Duda, who is batting .400.
Of course, nobody else on the team is hitting more than .267. Alex Gordon started on a tear with a .143 average and ‘Two hit Whitt” at .188. Oh sorry, it’s Chester Cuthbert who was hitting .400 not Duda.
We’re on our way gang…the question being, to where?
As we all know, the Royals did nothing to improve an average team from the past two seasons. It was to be a rebuild but instead it’s a group of vets with almost no future in KC.
We got Moose back by default, because nobody wanted him – not at over S6 million a year.
Sal Perez, our only all star perhaps, is out for weeks hurt with the rest of the team a mish mash of gosh knows what.
So what is it we’re building exactly?
A team that loses 90-100 games this year and beyond?
I say, yes.
Most of these vets are on their last legs. Moose is playing for a new contract somewhere else, Sal is stuck here, Whitt is pushing 30 and is at best a decent player on a bad team. Chester perhaps will be a good one. There seems to be no real pitching right now.
Will fans come see the former champs anymore?
My guess is, NO.
It’s now three years down the road and as the team continues to lose I think Royals’ stadium will look like the 1990’s and most of the 2000’s – empty..and soon.
What is there to see? Who is there to follow? Our minor league system is pretty empty.
On the other hand, the Kansas City Chiefs realizing they need to make moves to become a champion did so…they signed and drafted a potential great young quarterback in Patrick Mahome;, they signed a new big time wideout and are finding name defenders to replace old vets.
They’re on the move.
So it looks like wait until fall for KC to get interested in pro sports again.
I feel bad for Royals fans because its over.
Probably for years.
But who knows? Maybe a hero will show up out of thin air… anything’s possible, I guess.
Duffy certainly did get hammered (at the opener).
Are we going to have to endure double entendres like that all season?
hah
GLAZO: why don’t you tell us about what’s happening down at your joint.
Maybe people will go there instead of a royals game.
Been to several games and they still play decently although it will take time for
this team to get their stuff together.
And if based on past incidences….your sayingthe royals are not worth watching…they
should win the world series.
Wrong again in the final four but boom boom picked the winner.
When’s Bobby Slayton coming down to your joint?

Craig, I take exception of the characterization that the Royals “backed into” the 2014 playoffs. They won 89 games and finished 1 game out of first behind the Tigers, who won 90 games. Obviously, they were the better team, not losing a game in the playoffs until the World Series.
Right now they are trying to stay competitive, keep the local broadcast ratings high and cash in with a big cable contract when the current one expires in 2019. The infusion of revenue will allow them to rebuild the farm system thru the draft and in latin and south american scouting and add free agents to fill in weaknesses. Dayton Moore put together back to back AL champs, he can do it again.
Lou maybe ‘backed in’ was a bit strong but that entire year was so-so til the end and they were never looked at as much of anything but a wild card or long shot division winner…nobody talked World Series…until it happened…so they were at least unexpected…2015 yes a great year beginning til end…
As for a future great tv contract, money and a rebuild thats pie in the sky at this point…the minors have it appears little to offer us now or next season or two…we have nothing to brag about up here now…almost no hitting as you can see today with but two wins and both with one run, pitching is a big maybe…but hey strange things happen. Maybe a hero will emerge and things will turn around…sooner than later. I don’t see that but who knows.
Boy, I don’t know, Lou…
It took Moore six years to get any wood on the ball in 2014 and how many years leading up to his arrival did the Royals have great draft opportunities?
Anybody feel like killing the next six seasons?
Maybe…
But there could be lots of empty seats and all-you-can-eat hotdog promotions between now and then
There will not be one sell out this season..drawing about 4,000 a game at home, why they are one of baseballs worst, weather and its already over…no interest oh yeah we won it all in 2015…can’t sell that anymore Royals.
