Glazer: Same Old, Same Old from Same Old Chiefs

Were you shocked that Pittsburgh beat us?

Was anyone? Of course not!

Yes, the Chiefs were a slight Vegas favorite – 1-2 points – and hey, we lost by 2. So it was close, right? Not really.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 19-2 after the bye week; Alex Smith‘s quarterback rating is 5th all time in playoffs; we were at home; we had Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce,..and we still lost.

Face it, the Chiefs stink in the playoffs. They totally do.

Which comes as no surprise to anyone that we lost.

The Steelers are simply a better football team.

Hey, they never even scored a touchdown and they still WON! Wow. Why? The Chiefs have no offense. As usual really. The opening Chiefs drive was perfect, then came the rest of the game.

Not much, huh?

Look, this team was 12-4, which is very good. However, we never destroyed anyone all year did we? No blowouts. The Steelers blew us out early in the year. Yes, the Chiefs improved since then – they did – just not enough.

They had no answer for Pittsburg’s rushing attack and Le’veon Bell ran it down our throats for 170 yards. Where was KC’s pass rush? Where was Justin Houston? Oh, he was covering Antonio Brown. No sacks. Our defense was bend don’t break. However with just one takeaway from Eric Berry that’s just not enough.

I know, I know, the bad call on the 2 point conversion was horrid.

But hey, until that drive our offense was on vacation from their first drive in the game’s opening minutes. We just don’t have a big play offense, do we?

Yes, Hill and Kelce are dangerous, but not often enough. Jeremy Maclin had one nice catch, but other than that, nothing. Alex Smith was himself, up and down. He’s good just not better than good.

It’s just not enough as we all know and knew. We’re lucky this wasn’t a blowout. The Steelers easily could have scored three or more touchdowns.

This was the measure of a Chiefs season that fell short. What’s next?

The season’s over and Andy and Alex will be back next year. The Chiefs likely will make the playoffs again. And then?

This team needs more, a lot more.

I’m sorry for our fans, they deserve better.

It hurts, but we’re used to that, right?

Take a deep breath, CG. Between the Chiefs and the local weather folks, you are going to stroke out.

If I told you that the Steelers wouldn’t score a single touchdown and the Chiefs would score two, you would have bet the farm. It’s the NFL Playoffs. Guess what? Both teams are really good. Ask Dallas.

Big Ben, Brady, Rodgers & Ryan. Elite, elite, elite and……….elite. There is NO mystery to a winning NFL formula.

I’ll submit to you that the Chiefs massively overachieved this season. Given the key injuries on defense and the way Andy had to “plug and play” all over the D-Line and LB’s, it was a hell of an achievement to get where they did. A season sweep of what was arguably the toughest division in football made for a really fun year. In the end, 31 teams are bitterly disappointed when the season is over.

Cheers, my friend! Bring on the Royals……

      Point well taken, Jim…

Cup half full. However, I think the Chiefs were unmasked by a better team…at home, no less.

    • No Thanks says:

Playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we win a game!

That is Clark *unt’s mantra. Feed me more money, I’ll be good enough to be relevant, but never actually win a game that matters. For the record I swore off buying a Chiefs ticket after the first Royal’s playoff win, until the Chiefs win a playoff game. I’ve saved a ton of money, get to go to better Royal’s games, and doubt I will ever buy a Chief’s ticket again.

And I will never vote for a tax incentive for Arrowhead or the Chiefs. They don’t support the local economy anywhere near to the extent the Royals do. Tax incentives for the Royals make sense, for the Chiefs they are a waste of money. 8 home games v 81 home games…..

Had Todd Haley not inexplicably forgotten he had LeVeon Bell every single time the Steelers got inside the 10, this game would’ve been a blow out. LeVeon Bell moves you down the field with ease against the Chiefs defense, and then, inside the 10 it’s time to pass? Come on. Don’t think his patient running style is a good fit inside the 1o? Ok, I can see that. Then bring in D’Angelo Williams to punch it in. Sheezus, Haley.

On to the Chiefs. CG is right. The Chiefs’ offense isn’t nearly good enough. This is the same conversation everyone living here in KC has been having since I moved back to the area in 1987. (with the exception of the Vermeil teams, who had ZERO defense). Getting these patchwork quarterbacks from cast offs or surplus from other teams, just doesn’t work. Look at all the top quarterbacks today. How many were free agent signings? One? Drew Brees? Other than that, all the top qbs are drafted by their current teams. Brady. Roethlisberger. Wilson. Rodgers. You can even throw in guys like Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, etc. You’ve got to have a franchise quarterback, capable of producing seasons of 4000 yards+ passing per season and 30 plus touchdowns. That keeps the safeties off the line of scrimmage and helps the running game. Until the Chiefs go all in on a quarterback in the draft, they’ll be what they’ve always been. Enough to entertain the local rubes in Raytown & Independence, but not really good enough to make the rest of the NFL stand up and take notice.

Drafting a QB is a crap shot, Guy. I’m not disagreeing with you that teams need to TRY and get it right. But, the truth is that most teams HOPE they get it right. New England had no idea what they were going to get when they drafted Brady in the 6th round. Wilson is drafted in the 3rd round. If either team really thought those guys were going to be their franchise QB’s, they would have taken them in the 1st round. Even Rodgers was passed up by 23 other teams before the Packers drafted him. It happens. I think Derek Carr has a chance to be a good QB, but the Chiefs have beat him 4 times. Even he was a late 2nd round pick.

Anyways, besides Brees, P. Manning, Rich Gannon and K. Warner were some pretty good free agent signings.

I’m like you, though. You gotta try and draft one. The upside is SO much greater if you get it right.

    • E.H. says:

How can Alex be better than good when Maclin takes the day off? Kelce was the only viable target..other WR’s dropped the ball.

Gotta admit KC was close to winning the game because their defense in the red zone was outstanding.

How to improve KC’s playoff record? DUMP. I mean DUMP Jeremy Maclin since he can’t produce when it counts. This SENDS THE MESSAGE. Replace him with a real playmaker or two. Other than that all we need is a couple of tweaks on O and D and we will see better results.

      • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

LOL at this. Maclin was WIDE OPEN for an easy TD pass and Alex Smith threw it over the wrong shoulder. Just a horrible pass. Any qb worth two drops of salty piss makes that throw easily. Roethlisberger makes that throw with his eyes closed. Aaron Rodgers completes that pass hopping on one leg. Smith had a passer rating of around 70. Terrible. Put Maclin on the Steelers and see what happens. The problem ain’t Maclin.

        • E.H. says:

Alex had a better passing rating than Big Ben yesterday.

          What you gotz now Guy?

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

I fail to see your point. You say Maclin is the problem. I say it’s Alex Smith. Big Ben has two Super Bowl rings and 3 AFC Championships and a 13-6 record in the playoffs. What’s Alex Smith? 2-4??? He is what he is. A mediocre game manager.

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Oh and by the way, Alex DID NOT have a better passing rating than Roethlisberger yesterday. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts, pal. You lose.

  3. LanceTheIntern says:

Alex Smith can’t throw AND catch the ball 🙂

    • CG says:

LANCE PLEASE. Alex is a good quarterback, just not a great one and it takes a better quarterback to go to and win a super bowl…yes we need more weapons a better running back, better O line and ONE WIDE OUT THAT IS DANGEROUS…Hill may be in time…

  4. The Word says:

Was i the only one who loved what Travis Kelce about the refs?

Refs are the most protected people in sports. They never have to answer to the media. They hardly get any repercussions for the bad calls they make. They go to the game, do their job, weather it’s good or bad after the game they got back to Siberia in their bunker hiding until the next game.

  5. Laura B. says:

I agree with Kelce. Let the players decide a game and don’t take points off the board on a play in which the offensive man slips and falls to the ground. A referee should not decide the outcome.

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Herm Edwards doesn’t agree. And of all people, Tim Grunhard doesn’t agree. They both stated unequivocally that it was a hold and will be called almost everytime.

  6. CG says:

I think Travis Kelce will be fine…now about those number 1 in the nation KU basketball team.

  7. CG says:

Dick you mean me? You have my permission to not read my stories or coment anymore..go troll on someone else.
