The big game the week: Kansas City at Atlanta

The Chiefs are a 5 point underdog. Why? On the road, and the Falcons have a big time scoring offense with a poor defense. Plus the Chiefs are coming off a big win and may let down.

The good news is KC is getting Jeremy Maclin back and perhaps Dee Ford.

If the Chiefs do nearly as well on defense as they did in Denver, it’s likely a KC will net a close win, if not….look for a big loss.

The biggest question: can Chiefs QB Alex Smith bounce back in the final five games to be a better quarterback?

Will he run? Can he pass downfield more than once a game and hit the receiver? We’ll soon find out.

Can Tyreek Hill make a big difference again?

Not only that but KC faces Oakland on Thursday night at Arrowhead with the temps maybe below 20 degrees. The Raiders quarterback dislocated his finger last week but played hurt and won the game.

Clearly a win at Atlanta and a win at  Arrowhead against the Raiders likely puts KC in the drivers seat to win the West – maybe even with home field advantage all the way.

New England lost Rob Gronkowski – which could cost them a game or two.

However a loss to the Falcons likely means a wild card berth for KC. It drops the Chiefs to 8-4 and another loss is likely with their final four games all tough ones. Because 11-5 or 10-6 will not win the West and playoffs on the road are not a good thing for KC.

0000Area college football…

KU and MU are done. K-State could get a decent bowl after a win yesterday.

Still no area team is ranked. Horrid year for college football in KC area – one of the worst in decades with all three teams down. MU will be much better next year with one of the nation’s better young quartrerbacks.  And how can KU be any worse.

It’s now Bill Self time at Kansas.

Maclin out, not good, I’m hoping we win, but boy feels bad…important game…need the win to stay in the hunt for division title and a bye…we’ll see…need Hill to be outstanding again.

Well thanks sir..my picks are posted so you can add them up. As for most of the other things I didn”t estimate Plaza crowds or streetcar numbers. I always welcome other peoples picks on sports or anything else…nobody is always right.

  6. Kerouac says:

The fabulous Broncos win yet again with yet another of their rookie QB’s, Lynch who the swiss wanted but were outmaneuvered for by Denver. 2016 Broncos may be even more impressive than their 2015 version, due having lost not only all pro DT Jackson and Pro Bowl caliber LB Trevathan but also the best QB of his era Manning, a 17 year veteran being abley replaced by two rookie QB’s #7th round pick Siemian and #1 pick Lynch. Both the Broncos and Raiders look great enough to advance what will be a 4th ‘World Championship’, either team, eaither of them the only teams AFC West with an chance.

The swiss winning the West? Oww, my sides. That’s what you said earlier this year about the fraud-royals too, then about Clinton & then about the… well, speaking of about faces, how you like your egg on it, CG: hashed, over easy or scrambled?

    • CG says:

K I’m surprised at you friend. I know you dislike both the Royals and Chiefs organizations and much of your complaints are true and I agree. However things change. The Royals did go to two straight world series and won one. The Chiefs have been a huge letdown for all of us over and over again. They are playing with true grit this season and winning. Do I think they are going to the Super Bowl? Likely not, but they are in the hunt.

As for Clinton and Trump…as you know I was one of the first to see Trumps chances to win the nomination and the election. Towards the end of the election period he was on the ropes and I said so…but always thought he had a shot and the rest is history…Again nobody is right all the time. I mean you had KC Chiefs finishing last in their division…they are a playoff team. It would appear.

      • Kerouac says:

Friend CG, mutual admiration society we’ve got going: Kerouac comes here not only to provide information and entertainment, but to glean said wherever it can be found KCC.

I believe you’re wise enough to read between the lines, see what Kerouac brings and brings to bear upon the hapless, rudderless & fatigable be local fan-dumb & media-dumb. My stat facts are accurate to a fault, as my peerless rapier wit & refusal embrace modern day sports it’s true form – moneymaker sans integrity.

Kerouac predicted an 8-8 season, at best, for the swiss in 2016. To date they are meeting those expectations. Truth be, it really doesn’t matter if they were to go 0-16, 16-0 or break even… any more than if they don’t lose 59,999 to zero, or any other comic choice of Dutch rub I give them, acknowledgement their feeble efforts approaching half a century.

Kerouac has been correct on sports every & the swiss same since 1970… destination theirs as always ‘wait till next year’ perennial also-rans. Seasons change, people change… the swiss never do. Next week, next month, next year CG, we’ll be having this same conversation again, if we so choose.

The fraudroyals (how long did that ‘dynasty’ last?) are/were no more Champions than the Patriots this era or the swiss of 1969: pro sports lost all integrity a long, Long LONG time ago. ‘Every’ team is playoff bound almost literally, this ‘no team left behind’ era of too little talent, mediocre to poor teams in an league that $old out decades ago. If you/whomever find today’s pro sports legit in any way, you don’t remember the way it was & cannot see how the NFL, like frog on an stove at slow boil, is dying by the minute before our very eyes. As I have said before, the day is coming sooner than later, when every NFL team will qualify post season for purely economical reasons, regular seasons as pointless as pre, Championships today as hollow as smokebox of a steam locomotive.

In conclusion, why Kerouac said he follows sports/swiss (team formerly known Chiefs) more out of habit today than anything else. Only question that remains 2016: will Broncos, Raiders or Patriots advance to win whatever multiple of Superbowl ‘W’s in their franchises history. For certain, won’t be the ever stuck on one, it’s the loneliest number, swiss. For those see it and choose believe in any way, shape or form it is what it once was football / sports: may the farce be with you.

K – we are all familiar with your disdain and disgust for modern day professional sports and how you long for the good old days when they were pure. Strangely we never hear you opine on college sports and how they have deteriorated over the years. Why is that?

          • Kerouac says:

            “K –”

            – yes, what is it now?

“we are all familiar with your disdain and disgust for modern day professional sports and
how you long for the good old days when they were pure.”

            – cut it out… am I on ‘This Is Your Life’? Are you going to bring out Kerouac’s heroes of yesteryear Lou Gehrig, Rocky Marciano and Bart Starr? Are my late mom & dad and (nod ‘a kid and his dog’) Speck gonna come out from behind the curtain?

“Strangely we never hear you opine on college sports and how they have deteriorated over the years. Why is that?”

            – I’ve been busy. Ok, just how far out of whack things can become – college athletics is on the cusp stepping over a line will never allow step back: athletes being paid. Inevitable sooner or later, not a question of ‘if’, moreso ‘when’.

Step 1: no distinction professional & amateur Step 2: a union formed by student athletes in order negotiate their cut/piece of the revenue pie as NFL players same, just a smaller scale. Step 3: Nod R.E.M. “it’s the end of the (college amateur sports) world as we know it.”

No entrance requirements college and no GPA too be kept in order play & no minimum credit hours – no requirement to even attend classes, because they’re not students at all, be athletes, the sports tail that wags education’s dog.

From there, no limitation recruits re: graduating class HS, no limitations NFL to disallow 15-year olds (or 9-year old’s same) be eligible play in the NFL if good enough (MLB circa 1944: Cincinnati P Joe Nuxhall debuts at age 15, a player shortage due WWII helpful in Joe’s initial endeavor.

We’ve a lot to look forward to sports the future, … it’ll be great.

            🙂

            :-\

  8. CG says:

we split this week….still great year over 65% nice….

  9. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Big Red continues to intellectually punk the other NFL coaches. He out-coached and schemed his way around Atlanta despite the horrendous number of penalties/yards the Chiefs committed. Good gawd! Kelce has been a beast the last few games and Hill is becoming a bigger part of the offense. Man, that dude has some serious gitty-up! Smith continues to be Steady-Eddy, but wish he had better touch on the deep throws. He could of had 2 more TD’s with Ware and Conley. One under-thrown and one over-thrown.

All in all, they have been fun to watch. Just when you think they are going to rip your heart out…….

Those dreaded Raiders this Thursday! It isn’t do-or-die, but a win would be enormous and go a long way to locking up a playoff spot. It’s a 3-way race in the AFC West. Chargers are toast and Philip Cry-Me-A-Rivers is old.

Week 17 (Raiders at Broncos) might be for all the marbles.

Go Chiefs…… you magnificently flawed bastards!

    • CG says:

Well put Jim..agree totally. The Chiefs are at the bottom on everything..rush D, pass D, like 25th and lower…running offense bottom ten and passing offense bottom ten…only in points scored are we top ten 9th and of course turnovers number one…so hard to believe this team is 9-3…but like you if we beat Oakland I think we get the division..maybe Denver beats them too or somebody else…Titans won’t be easy here nor Broncos…Chargers on the road at the end always a tough one…but yeah I think a Raider beat down will do it…lets see…it has been fun..
