Five months ago, I wrote about “The End Of Europe”
We’e not quite there yet, but the U.K. voting itself out of the E.U. ( Brexit) took us closer. We could talk about what comes next. We can talk about the financial implications, the social implications. We can talk about what it foreshadows for the American presidential elections. Those are all interesting subjects and they are all being talked about by lots of other people.
However let’s talk about what Brexit showed us about the American news media.
NBC, ABC, CBS and MSNBC were all surprised and shocked.
The New York Times had the “Remain” camp with an 80 percent chance of winning on the day of the vote. They didn’t see it coming.
How is that possible?
Bookies in the U.K. had the information. That means the facts were there, but they were overlooked. We could try to guess the reasons for this bad investigative reporting. Instead, I think we should just add a large grain of salt to the so-called information that comes from these sources.
Most of the media talking heads immediately began calling the Brexit voters xenophobic, racist and ignorant of the turmoil they have caused.
Those pundits revealed to us that they are globalists.
They believe that a few “smart” people in a central location know what’s good for us. And the only way they can process the rejection is to paint those who disagree in a negative light.
They are only in favor of democracy if it supports their beliefs.
Democracy requires sovereignty. Reject that, and you reject democracy itself.
There was a huge imbalance of Stay propaganda compared to Remain propaganda in the U.K. The fear among American Democrats is that our citizens will also reject the propaganda that passes for news.
They have groomed us to accept sources that hide the truth. They have become more invested in proving the “other side” wrong rather than reporting all the facts. It seems like the U.S. is engaged in a giant court battle of, “You’re Wrong vs No You’re Wrong.”
Here are a few facts about the E.U. that Americans rarely see:
It began in 1951 as the European Coal and Steel Community. Six nations tried to heal the wounded relations caused by World War II through duty-free trade. The Treaty of Rome created the European Economic Community, or Common Market in 1957. President Charles de Gaulle of France vetoed Britain’s application in 1963 and in 1967. Britain finally joined in 1973. That explains some of Britain’s feelings toward the E.U.
Most Americans don’t have a good picture of who actually voted on Brexit.
British citizens 18 and older, citizens abroad who have been registered to vote at home in the last 15 years and residents of Britain who are citizens of Ireland or of the Commonwealth, which consists of 53 countries, including Australia, Canada, India and South Africa. The information about who voted runs contrary to the US talking heads that give us a picture of racist, white factory workers rising up against the more educated Europeans.
There are lots of instructive parallels in Europe for us, but the flow of “information” is eye-opening. Every day, we should force ourselves to listen to news sources that disagree with our feelings. Maybe we should tone down the Democrats vs Republicans and be a bit open to reality.

Odds are favorable that it never happens; Boris Johnson still has to invoke Article 50 — assuming Johnson succeeds Cameron – as it appears Cameron wants nothing to do with that task himself. And Johnson has publicly said there’s no need to trigger Article 50 right away

This weekend spent my Saturday at the VA
on van brunt. After 5 hours there I saw some
of the most depressing items I’ve seen in a
long time. As vets, they deserve only the best…
but no doctors want to work there. Saw the
positive as veterans got glasses/medicines/
saw doctors/and yes there is some hope that
we can correct these problems.
A major decision will have to be made by we
as americans. Do we jump into fight as dumpster
recommends, with the high tolls in both human
lives and human injuries…or will we as the
leaders of the world blaze a trail to save ALL OF
GOD’S CHILDREN. nO MATTER WHAT GOD

The Brexit vote showed two things that is important with our election.
No. 1, the MSM lies. Every story about the vote was about how the Remain camp was going to win and big. Well it didn’t so how could 90 percent of all MSM be wrong? Because they lied too you.
No. 2, calling the opposition bigots, sexist, xenophobes or racist isn’t going to work anymore. Like the UK, there is a growing soft nationalism around the nation. People want to protect their culture and civilization. And people are tired of seeing the third world come in here and turning areas of our country into their hellhole.
Great topic Mark but your analysis of it was faulty and shallow. More research on your part would have revealed that.
First off, to blame the American media for misreading the outcome completely overlooks that the English media missed it bigtime, going in and our press just followed theirs. Polls over there showed that the Remain camp seemed to hold the edge, though narrow. After the murder of MP Jo Cox by the right wing extremist that was driven by anti-EU sentiment, polls showed the Remain camp seemed to be pulling away. Heck, even David Cameron himself in calling for the referendum initially viewed the options and thought the vote would go his way and cement his place within the Conservative Party. Little out of line to blame the American MSM when even their own Prime Minister made a career ending blunder.
Secondly, the English electorate is far, far different than is the American one. If you had taken a look at the voting demographics in Great Britain you would have seen that it is far less diverse with older whites occupying a much bigger piece of the pie. While there was a wide spectrum of issues addressed in the Brexit vote, I think Chuck is correct that with regards to the perspective of the older, white, rural, voters in GB that drove the vote, it was about immigration. Now these voters who went into the voting booths thinking that Remain was going to win and choosing to vote to Leave as a protest vote, are $#i++ing bricks when they see what their Leave votes have done to their pensions.
Finally, set aside the American MSM and take a look at the American markets themselves. Investors here had already priced in the Remain victory with the markets taking a nice jump at the end of last week, prior to the vote. Typically our markets make pretty intelligent analyses of impending events and price out their opinions in advance. Pretty obvious that our own markets, let alone our own media, missed this one (other than George Soros apparently).
Trump has and will continue to misplay Brexit. I think that many older conservative voters in this country, seeing what the Brexit vote and sentiment behind it has done to the value of their own retirement accounts, will have to reconsider their opinions.
In any event, thanks Mark, for offering up this topic. We’re always looking for new and different ways to argue about politics. 🙂

This is exactly why these politicians are being forced out. Get on the phone, show up, find solutions, make progress?
