It’s getting ugly…
It’s hard not to talk about the fall of the Kansas City Royals this season…
Everyone complains but then says, “Well, it’s early. There are lots of games left.”
That’s true, however being seven games back in May and two games under .500 isn’t where anyone expected this championship ball club to be right now.
First let’s take a look at the good news – however little there is.
Eric Hosmer is coming out super hot with the league’s third best batting average at .325 and six home runs. He’s is the only real position offensive star on this team thus far.
Now the bad…
Moose started off hot with power, but now he’s out with a broken thumb. And even when he gets back in a few weeks that will likely slow down his home run production. Lorenzo Cain has picked up the pace batting .270 and had three home runs Tuesday’s loss to the Yankees. Alex Gordon and Sal Perez are okay but the rest of the team’s pretty cold. Kendrys Morales is batting just .193 with three home runs.
Hitting’s been the problem early, but now the starting pitching’s fallen off.
Chris Young was a huge help last season but this year he’s one and five with an ERA of 6.68. And Chris Medlen is worse with one win and three losses, including being shelled last night and an ERA of 7.77. Ian Kennedy has looked good with three wins and a 2.13 ERA to lead the team.
However, the teams been playing so poorly we can’t even use superstar Wade Davis who is stuck at eight saves, because we almost never have a lead late in the games.
At least the Royals are in a weak division.
I think even if KC plays just average they’ll finish second to Chicago.
So barring a total breakdown – which is where the Royals are now – KC still could still be a wild card contender. That helps to keep up interest and attendance up to a point. Hey, because everyone wants to go see the world champs play at home.
So after 30 years of , “Oh, brother” and two seasons of, “Oh, wow” is our team returning to the shadows? Unless something drastic happens I’m afraid that’s the case.
And let’s face it, where do we go without Eric Hosmer after one more season? How do we look without Wade Davis or Moose? With our stars contracts coming up soon we need to find replacements. Yes, Sal Perez will be a Royal for years to come, but Lorenzo Cain could also be gone soon.
So what was once a young, hot team is now a bunch of guys looking to advance their personal futures after next season.
On top of that it’s hard to keep top players on a team that isn’t a playoff caliber squad.
Maybe they battle out of all this and the sun comes shinning through, but history says that’s an uphill battle. Just to make up a seven game deficit would take a hot month for KC and a cold one from the White Sox. Possible? Yes. Likely?
To win big you have to have shut down pitching like we did last year.
This season it’s just not there yet. Clearly Young and Medlen are not the answer. If the team doesn’t start winning soon, it also becomes a mental issue for the entire squad.
This team has been on a roll for two years and they are not used to being seven games back in May. Last year they never fell below .500 after their seven game opening winning streak. Last year nobody chased the Royals, they were battling for the league’s best record and got that as well.
I believe interest will remain high as long as the team doesn’t fall completely apart.
Attendance will stay strong at the stadium, however if they keep playing like this the average fan’s interest will fade. Winning cures all ills, but can this team be put back together and win again this year?
This year’s start for the Royals has been just so ugly to this point.
I think we’ll have the answer by the All Star break.

Not terrible…not great. One great month would cure all of this wailing and gnashing of teeth by the unwashed masses of fairweather Royals’ fans.

Look I know every Royals fan is down about the start of the season. It sure could turn around. We have plenty of time. I just don’t like the way they look, I’m sure you don’t. The energy is just so down. You can see it at time. We just don’t have a ‘stopper’ Ian Kennedy was the best starter and he got smoked last night giving up 7 runs to a last place Yankees team. So something has to change and fast. That’s all. Hey we had two great seasons, its tough to repeat.

Live from royals stadium….

2 years ago through 34 games the Royals were 16-18 and 6 games back of a Detroit team that was far better than this White Sox team. On May 20th of that year they were 7 back and 3 weeks later they were a 1/2 game up. On July 21st they were 8 back and and 3 weeks later they were a 1/2 game up. So, please, let’s have some perspective. Are there areas where this team needs to improve quickly? You bet, but it’s not insurmountable. It’s time to dump Infante especially if he’s not playing regularly. Eat the contract and move on. I would go with Colon and maybe give Cuthbert a shot at second although he probably should spend some time in Omaha learning the position. Merrifield is an option as well and could play the outfield. I would end the myth that Alcides Escobar hitting lead off is somehow the magic key to their success. Let him hack away in the eighth or ninth spot in the order and put Gordo in the lead off spot where he can get on base for Moose, Cain, and Hos. I would relegate Dyson back to fourth outfielder status, option Orlando to Omaha, and give either Brett Eibner or Jorge Bonifacio a shot. Both are playing well at Omaha and could give the lineup a bit more oomph. Dyson is a nice player to have but this offense really can’t afford a defense first outfielder hitting 230 with no power. I suppose you could give Orlando a shot but there is a reason he spent 10 years in the minors. The starting pitching is the one area where it’s justifiable to freak out about it. Kennedy and Volquez are good pitchers but they’re not aces. Ventura appears to be a head case and/or is destined for some new ligaments in his elbow. Young I’m afraid is a lost cause as a starter. I still hold out hope for Medlen but the rotator cuff issue doesn’t sound promising. Gee and Duffy are worth looking at, I would give Wang a look as well. Mike Minor, Kyle Zimmer, and Jason Vargas are alternatives down the road but it’s hard to see those guys having much of an impact. The trade market is pretty thin and I’m not sure what the Royals could really offer to land someone who could really make an impact. The 800 pound elephant in the room is that this organization has been dreadful at developing starting pitching and it may be catching up with them. With that said the starting rotation looked pretty bleak last year but they stepped it up and did what they needed to do when it mattered most. The White Sox are being led by Sale, Quintana, and Latos and a bullpen that’s been excellent. But there is a lot of dead weight in that lineup and they haven’t had very good results behind those three starters. Even Latos is starting to come back down to earth and the bullpen had a total meltdown the other night. Sale hasn’t been a very good second half pitcher in recent years and was even shut down at the end of 14. I think they have gotten off to a good enough start to stay in the conversation but they won’t run away and hide with the division like the Royals did last year. The Indians have great starting pitching, but a bad bullpen and an inconsistent offense. The Tigers are carrying too much age and the Twins have come hurtling back to reality. They were a streaky team in 14 and got hot at the right time to make it into the World Series. Last year they cruised through the regular season but had to grind it out in the playoffs to win it all. This year I think they’ll have to grind it out to make it back to the postseason but I think they can do it with a few adjustments to the roster and lineup.

Yes this year is 2014 at best a grind it out season if they come back against a poor division, so the Royals have a chance. I agree its the starting pitching that is crap right now…hitting can be fixed to be decent….BUT, the energy and leadership may be gone. So we’ll see. I write a lot…but I write fast..hence spelling and grammar not always on
but even with hearne and your stories…there are tons of spelling and grammar
errors even though you two are the heads of kcc.
so spelling and grammar…not one person on here has correct grammar and

as far as your movies about ali…never mentiond those. I don’t care….I know
some of the original investors in ali from Louisville who were bought out so
this does not interest me. Met ali…got pic with him…never saw your movie and
to be honest I deal with more famous and current sports and public figures
that while I love the man….it’s old hat!
As far as your writings….I have computers/programmers that can do incredible
things. I don’tgo after you personally. Iprobably have said more good things
about you and your personality than anyone on this or any other blog.
PERIOD! But if you put yourself out there as a writer/expert you need to learn
to take the heat when your words are wrong. And to say the least you are wrong
quite often…let’s say wayto often. I understand you do this as a hobby so most
people overlook the facts you write and the stories you write that are pure b.s.
They’re wrong. So if you can’t take the heat …get out of the kitchen.
If you can’t handle the legitimate criticisms (not the personal insults like you
being a snitch or whatever others use to attck you personally) then you need
to either fact check your statements or stop putting yourself out there
as an “expert” and quit writing.
I have at my disposal information that few people have. I use the smartest
programmers almost in the world (I found them on freelance.com) and they
are incredible. So they deliver stats/info/data that I used for both business and
playing around.
KCC is just playing around. I don’t take it seriously but I love a great debate.
I study stats and can prove pretty much any mistake incorrect.
You’ve read my posts. I predict probabilities and do it for both business and
fun. That’s why some of the smartest business people in the nation depend on
my analysis and work to run their businesses.
This is funand pleasure but when you write such ridiculous pieces (especially
about things I am passionate about …sports and politics I take you to task
because you’re wrong. If you don’t want Harley to fact check your stories…either
make sure you’ve got them right…or stop writing.
When you make factual statements that are wrong (and most of them are wrong)
you need to beable to defend those statements not with threats of violence or
name calling…but with an educated fact filled response.
If someone disagrees with you they’re called names.
Truth is I take more hate onkcc than you do. But I’ve seen the increase in
people proving you wrong. It’s not jst me.
So when the guy named “really” comes on and writes a real piece of journalism
that shows your predictions wrong and goes on to do a great job of analysis
on things like whip and war in baseball it makes you look like an amateur.
Again…its fun and entertainment (you admitted it) so I havesome fun with
you and wislon and southy…..and what few people actually read this blog (we
hve the numbers that hearne has refused to print from sites such as compete.com/
plus the ability my people have to pull up google analytics we can find out
things like the nmber of people who read your story….what comments they
read…so nothing is hidden from Harley.
So be professional. If you have a comic come on stage and he’s not funny
you don’t hire him again. If he makes horrid comments you don’t rehire
him. So while no one on here has said anything positive about your business
or your personality….Harley has. You’re a different duck. You walk and live
life YOUR WAY! We understand tht. But don’t take this too seriously.
I get attacked all thetime..I have fun with comments….an I get sarcastic
wit h them (except in chuckles case) who’s anti semitic and vile racist
writings need to be attacked.
And if you’re a fan of a jew hater that’s fine too…but I will not let it
go unheeded.

I have defended you many many times. Your stories about hotties and such
are gfun and that’s what made hearnes column in the star so fun. He even

After watching the ‘new’ Royals battle last place Atalanta this weekend at the K. Welp, lets be fair the Royals look kinda average compared to the rest of the American League. Lucky to pull out a weak win in game 3 with extra innings needed to defeat the 8 win Braves. At home no less. But the rest of the American League is not so hot either. Soooo..if KC can stay around .500 all year, and they have enough younger guys that they can, most teams are just old with no new stars…than yes they could be a wild card. We watch our team but man there are some really weak lineups all over the league…just few new stars and the names with big paydays are getting just too old to compete. So the Royals can come back even though they are nowhere near as good as last years ballclub. Its ugly out there but it is for most teams, look at the Twins, Houston and some other up and coming your squads, yikes. Not too good right now.
