On one hand it clings to and celebrates its small town charm. On the other, it longs for a taste of superficial, big city amenities with chains like Ulta and Chick-fil-A.
Think I’m kidding?
Let’s cut to the chase…
The trouble with living in Lawrence is twofold; there’s just no significant tension, angst or big city energy here – no real passion or desire to right wrongs, hold people accountable or get stuff done. It’s just too sleepy.
The second worst thing in this town: the cult status of KU basketball.
College hoops here is a drug that crosses all boundaries – rich and poor, young and old, hip, square – Republican or Democrat. It’s an obsession that serves as a breeding ground for the snobby “wine and cheese” and “whine and cheese” set attitudes that former KU coach Roy Williams so famously pointed to during his tenure here as chief Kool-Aid distributor.
And so Saturday’s loss to Villanova wasn’t just disappointing, it was actually good medicine for a town that sweeps just about everything else important under the rug in the interest the almighty, mythical Jayhawk bird.
“Four-Saken,” shouted the headline in Sunday’s Lawrence Journal World.
That’s basically the bad news.
The good news is, whiney Jayhawk fans can now saddle up for more criticism of what is perceived by some as KU coach Bill Self‘s hit-and-mostly miss – NCAA tourney record:
Because the loss dropped Self’s overall Elite Eight win-loss record to 2-6.
And now maybe can we get back to more important subjects like banning the Confederate flag at Free State High School and whether or not to continue putting the kibosh on an upscale retail mall that developers want to build without so much as $1 in tax breaks in the southeast part of the city.
Unfortunately though, it’s mostly time to start hand wringing over which underclassmen KU basketball players depart for the NBA and how many McDonald’s All Americans Bill Self can recruit for this year’s basketball team.
Because of course, we live in a cult here and have little time for things other than KU basketball and the status quo…
Hearne there is any easy fix for what bothers you about Lawrence—move somewhere else.
He works in Topeka selling cars now!
What else did you expect when you moved to that one horse burb?
Maybe he expected the young chicks to dig an old man like him. I mean, they dig Bill Self.
As far back as I can remember KU was always Snob Hill and K-State was Silo Tech.
There’s a reason Wilt Chamberlain didn’t stay but two-years.
Freshmen couldn’t play varsity then, so three-years.
Want to have some fun? Just say “Roy Williams” to any KU fan today.
On another note, take heart Hearne, your favorite publication, “The National Enquirer” has broken the Ted Cruz Sex Scandal. The same guy who broke the John Edwards story (Who, by the way, as I understand it, won the Pulitzer.) says Ted has 5, mistresses.
Clinton has a safe space in his “Bro” bubble reserved. The meaning of
“is” tonight at 11!
Lawrence is one thing….basketball.
Without it the university would be another Ottawa university.
Noone would care about it except the students from Shawnee mission and
blue valley who populate Lawrence.
Basketball is their forte……like football is to Alabama and Louisiana.
Why fight it. Without Bill self that city would be just another dusty college
town on I 70 for the Colorado growers to transport their products east.
And the city would be broke. The governor is doing everything he possibly
can to ruin education in Kansas (and doing a great job) and if he gets hisway
ku and kstate will haveto run bake sales to pay their bills.
So enjoy the city. The Korean restaurant that serves turtle soup (without the shell)
or the nice hotels and stores kept afloat by the basketball team.
And the retailers in kc selling billions of dollars worth of KU merchandise to old
alumni.
Or the tv stations making big bankselling those commercials.
Be glad and celebrate the KU basketball team. Without them Lawrence is no
different than dodge city…a city known as a graveyard.
Oh…and if you wait another 20 years that football team MIGHT win a game!
So quick to judge!
Hey, I went Arizona, but at least KU was named by Forbes as the state’s top school, unlike Mizzou!
they’re broke! There’s only 2 schools in Kansas worth anything…oh I might include Wichita state…so 3.
In Missouri you’ve got all the universities of mo (kc/Columbia/
springfield/st. Louis etc)…plus some excellent schools throughout the state in Kirksville/Maryville…..schools with
decent student counts.
KU is a piece of dust now thatthey arebroke. Even self
is pissedat athletic department because he has to bring
in all the dough for the dept.
And after losing in ncaa…it might be worse!
Mizzou is doing just fine. It’s ranked asone of the top
j/vet/med/business schools in the nation….what’s ku got…
oh…basketball and bill self….but they’re about to go broke.
hahahahahahahaha.
MU….1.6 billion in the bank…..so much moneythe state
wants to borrow mone from the schools.
For gods sake outside your strip joints (weak) whatelse
is there?
come on hernia…you’re single now…movebac k where you
ad the glaza can go pimping the streets for teens together!!!!!!!
I’ll move back to KC if you out yourself…
And how does going from a Big 12 contender in basketball to losing to UMKC and the football program borderline in the tank add to MU’s illustriousness?
You huffing paint Harley.
MU is down some 30 million and 1,000 students and I would wager it is far worse. That is just what they will admit. Your Butt Buddies at “Concerned Student 1950” along with the Brain Dead “BLM” thugs have killed that University.
MU is screwed for years, maybe decades.
no ditch digger and I m not a loser who screams
at workers at loews to get to work.
Missouri is not down 30 million…and this year
they will reach their maximum capacity of the
school. Theyhave 1.6 billion in the bank…
their recruiting is going well for football
and they are making huge bank since leaving the
little 12 and becoming a part of the SEC.
And please hearne…don’t move back to kc.
You’re outdated….unknown….and yesterday’s
news in kc. No contacts…no stories of any
magnitude (except the jewelheist)….depending
on glaza to carry this blog (when k and Harley
show the guy knows nothing about sports or
current events)…please stay in Lawrence hearne…we’ve got enough old angry senile
vulgar/vile speaking senior men inthis town
already.
MU is not screwed. Don’t worry about everyone
else…you and chucklets havev enough problems
of your own.
“I m not a loser who screams
at workers at loews to get to work.”
No, you are not. What you are, is an anonymous, beta male pussy with a serious Dissociative Identity Disorder and delusions of grandeur who is off his meds.
MU is T Rexed right up the azz.
hey ditchdigger.
how would you know anything about college…
which college did you go to?
KCDDCC? Kansas city ditch digging career
college.
go back to your dirt foooooooooooool
Apparently, the college town of Lawrence, Kan., is somewhat dominated by the college in that town. This is the kind of insight I keep coming back here for.
I had no idea a college existed in that backwater-burg.
Unfortunately though, it’s mostly time to start hand wringing over which underclassmen KU basketball players depart for the NBA and how many McDonald’s All Americans Bill Self can recruit for this year’s basketball team.
Speaking of McDonald’s All Americans Hearne, did you know that your town that wants to cling to its small town charm has a McDonald’s. And I’m not talking about an old fashioned McDonald’s building like you might see in old black and white photographs, but one of those new fangled modern looking buildings.
what about this diello kid. Was he a bust or doeshe just need time to get
more experience. What happened? Probably the announcers and pundits
like glaza put this kid on a throne and it doesn’ t happen.
Hopefully he can become a big time star. Just wondering why he faded
out after the first couple of games.
Why would anyone in Kansas and the university of Kansas think of themselves as “Snob Hill” for christsakes it’s Kansas. Broke state, no money, crazy-ass Govenor Brownback and has a terrible nationwide image
