Glazer: Chiefs Can Win, Game May Be Decided Early

KANSAS CITY, MO - SEPTEMBER 29: Tamba Hali #91 of the Kansas City Chiefs knocks the ball loose from Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots for a fumble during the third quarter at Arrowhead Stadium on September 29, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

Pretty much everyone has jumped in on how the Chiefs could beat the Patriots today…

Sure they could.

However even with their 11 game win streak, a playoff win and solid play, the football / sports /media world still doesn’t t have much respect for our Chiefs. Based on their horrid post season record up until now and being no-shows in big games for more than 40 years except for the 1993 season. They’ve been the K-State of the NFL all too often. A nice little team that doesn’t win any games that matter. They just haven’t.

So is today the day?

It looks like rain and I’m not sure who that helps. Our running game has been just average lately. QB Alex Smith is our key running back right now. And that’s not a good thing if the Pats bottle him up. Because it’s really more critical that the Chiefs can run rather than Pats.

Because Tom Brady has all three of his weapons back and that’s not good.

Spot he can chip us to death with short throws over the middle. Can Smith hit his targets early and get a badly needed early lead for our defense? We might want to take the ball if we win the coin toss rather than defend. We need a lead to put some pressure on Brady because he’s the ‘best’ quarterback in modern NFL history. No question. We all know our pass D has to get to him or make him throw early.

The Chiefs have to put pressure on the Patriots to win, because the Patriots expect to win.

Big difference.

We don’t want Brady coming down the field on us late in the game for a winning score. Our offense has shown little ball control as of late in the 3rd and 4th quarter. We handoff and don’t move the ball well. That keeps our D on the field much longer late in the game and yes they do get tired.

imagesSo what will happen?

My guess is this thing is decided fairly early.

I’d love to see us down close and Alex do something he really has never done. LIKE COME BACK WITH A WINNNG DRIVE. WIN A BIG GAME. ONE THAT COUNTS. ONE THAT WILL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES MAKE THIS FRANCHISE MATTER AGAIN. Can he? Will he? Boy, like all of you I sure hope so. I really do. As much as I’ve been down on the Chiefs for years, they deserved it, but I badly want all this to change.

A win would be huge. And going to the Super Bowl after would be fanastic.

Royals, Chiefs, KU all on top of the sports world. How nice would that be?

I think we can do it.

I do believe our defense is the NFL’s best and not even close. Yes, even better than Denver. There is no weak spot on our defense. I can’t say that about our offense. They just have to be solid. Alex has to be the leader he’s dreamed of being and it all really starts today.

I pick KC in a HUGE’ UPSET.

Don’t kid yourselves, NFL nation thinks this is a near lock for New England. They are saying nice things but in their heart we are still a doormat. LETS SHUT THEM UP. CHIEFS 23-PATS 17. PLEASE

PICKS

KC + 11 on a tease over Pats with Arizona -1 OVER PACKERS

CAROLINA +4 over SEAHAWKS WITH DENVER -1 1/2 over STEELERS.

LETS GET IT DONE THIS TIME!

KC down 7-3 after 1st Qtr. Still, the Chiefs are looking better than I’ve ever seen them..so far.

  2. CG says:

Welp we got killed. Its kinda sad. We were really never in the game. Brady was under no pressure. Our offense was not much. Brady is great Alex is just OK. An elite quarterback against a B NFL quarterback. This is as good as the Chiefs can be with Alex. Just the way it is, without our D playing lights out and they didn’t we get run over. Way it is…

The Chiefs are a good not great team. Second group of good NFL teams. Pats are first group at home. just much better. A bitter pill. I like Brady to win his 5th Super Bowl.

    Nice ride but it ended…

    • Furioso says:

CG I think the Chiefs are on the brink of greatness. We really didn’t have a #1 receiver out there today and we still had a decent chance. That Davis fumble killed us as we could have scored and it turned out to be a 14 point swing.

Alex Smith is very good and we can still go further with him. We just need to have another top notch WR in addition to Maclin and TE Kelce, then we’re practically unstoppable.

All in all a GREAT SEASON since we finally won a playoff game and in the playoff game we lost we didn’t completely embarrass ourselves like we have for 22 seasons.

Finally, nobody else can beat Brady so why should we have been the exception? We went up against the ALL TIME best and came up a little short. Let’s just make sure to keep on sending Andy Reid slim-fast and a gym membership so we can keep him around awhile. Oh Yeahhhh!!!!!

Heh heh heh heh heh heh heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh! WIPEOUT! Patri-cheats do the wiping, swiss get wiped – out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjiOtouyBOg

Much more to come from Kerouac (just back from holiday on the French Riviera) soon aft CG posts the sad swiss refrain…

  4. Phaedrus says:

    I blame Trezelle Jenkins.

  5. The Word says:

Something told me this was going to happen. Too many talking heads in the local and even national media was hyping up this team.

The Texans game was fools gold. Yes it was great they won and finally broke the playoff loosing streak, but they played a team that was 9-7 is one of the worst divisions in the NFL. The Texans QB couldn’t start for a CFL team. Yet, if you took the kick off return away, KC scored six points at the half.

I think the only one that called it was Jason Whitlock who said:

Andy Reid deserves a lot of praise for getting the Chiefs to 10-5 after a 1-5 start. But so do the schedule-makers and lady luck. Kansas City’s best victories during the streak came against the Steelers and the Broncos. The Chiefs caught Pittsburgh with Landry Jones subbing for Big Ben. And KC hosted Peyton Manning on the worst night of his career, the night Manning got benched.

Other than those two victories, the Chiefs have beat up on teams that haven’t been in playoff contention since Labor Day. OK, that’s an exaggeration. But it’s a bunch of bad teams. During their early season losing streak, KC lost to Denver, Green Bay, Cincinnati and Minnesota.

My Chiefs are overvalued and will get exposed in the playoffs.

    • Furioso says:

Well, the Chiefs didn’t really get exposed they lost their star WR and stayed within striking distance of probably the best NFL team ever going on 14 years now. Plus the game was AT NE and they’ve got a fantastic record playing at home during the playoffs.

Yes, a lot of people predicted KC would continue their streak and win the upset. I was like Whitlock when I posted on this blog the Chiefs were pretty certain to lose.

However, in years past(something like FORTY FIVE YEARS PAST!) the Chiefs would get blown out to a team like the Pats. God, I look back these past 4 or 5 decades and I think to myself “how could I ever had hope?” the Chiefs were built to lose. I remember in the late 70’s the Raiders came to town and a day or two before the game the local sports reporter asked a raider player if they thought the Chiefs might compete for the division. The raider simply replied over and over again “NO”. Man, that was embarrassing to have another team, especially the Raiders, show such appropriate disdain for our lost franchise.

Then the 80’s: I think we fired a good coach around 82′ and then lucked into one wildcard game later in the decade. Funny, we had to upset the Raiders to get into that lucky playoff spot..which we never showed up for.

Then the 90’s: This is when I was absolutely nuts about the KC Chiefs. We had Shottenheimer and Derek Thomas and Neil Smith and we went to the playoffs 7 times. We went 3-7 in those playoff games with a crippled Joe Montana winning 2 of those games by putting the entire team on his back. I remember Shottenheimer mailing in a Vikings game in late 93 because we had wrapped up a playoff spot but we should have showed up for that game and got a better seed because we ended up going to Buffalo and Montana got knocked out in the AFC Title game..he literally could only see white the rest of the game. In hindsight, we never really had a chance in the 90’s under Shottenheimer. He got some young waitress pregnant then hightailed it out of town.

The NEW MILLENIUM: KC would have been in the playoffs the very first month of the new millennium but Oakland(who we OWNED during the 90’s) beat us in overtime as they had a new secret weapon: Jon Gruden. We got knocked out of the playoffs and DT died a month later. The Chiefs floudered for a couple of seasons before Vermeil got us steadily back on track. Still no playoff wins with zero defense.

Herm came and went with little fanfare.

      Mr. Hunt died.

      New Hunt took over.

Haley. Everybody was happy when he left, which wasn’t long.

Romeo: He deserved one year as HC just for beating the undefeated Packers.

Andy Reid: After 45 years we finally seem to be rising to the top. It’s been a long, long slog but maybe we’ve done it. His first year was a 9 game winning streak and a meltdown in the playoffs, totally KC style. His 2nd year he had to deal with a lot of injuries and lost players and we were cruising towards a playoff spot until we petered out by losing 4 of the last 6. Andy seemed to get it right by playing possum the first 6 games but we lost at least 2 games we should have won. Sure, we won 11 in a row after a 1-5 start but it wasn’t enough to get us a home playoff game and that is what really ended this cinderella run.

I think we’re all really looking forward to Sep already!

  6. miket says:

we did okay. not having huston and maclin at 100% hurt, but the patriots beat us with a better game plan. they came out, smacked our defense twice in a row with two long drives and two tds and here’s your toast, sir.

    • krislke says:

Exactly, Mike. The Chiefs didn’t lose that game as much as the Patriots won it. They had an excellent game plan and executed it flawlessly. And as well as the Patriots played, they still won that game by only one touchdown.

Contrary to what we read from the “experts” here, the Chiefs were never out of that game until late in the fourth quarter. A break or two, and the outcome might have been different.

Unfortunately, they caught the Patriots on a day where they weren’t in the mood to hand out breaks.

  7. CFPCowboy says:

Chiefs performed great. They’ve won my most improved award. Thanks

  8. they’ll be back . They’re headed to being an elite team. Bring in Thomas as a
receiver from O state. Find us another corner like the current d backs.
Play offense with some creativity because with macklin/another great reeiver
and Charles hopefully back and let alex play his game running if needed.

  9. Kerouac says:

CG, it’s gettin’ pretty deep in here – hipwader high – terms lack of cogent comments yesterday’s humiliation of the swiss by the Patri-cheats; it’s time for you to provide the levity… Kerouac as always will provide the facts & biting narrative evisceration.
The ‘yeah buts’ & ‘if onlys’ reconstituted excuses swiss fandumb always warm the cockles Kerouac’s end of football season heart… told all ya alls how it was gonna be.

heh heh heh – GO BRONCOS!

    🙂

    • CG says:

I know K. Well other than Harley and one or two others, of course my read was right on target. Without the A game from the defense and and Alex, no shot. I was hoping for better. Brady is just outstanding and that’s that. We had no chance the game really ended on the first Patriot drive, we couldn’t stop anything Tom did, nothing. He could have scored on any drive he chose. He had it wrapped up in the second quarter and was there if ‘needed’ he really wasn’t needed much. Game over. Chiefs tried, Alex went all out in the 4th quarter. Too little too late. Set,game, match…good effort by KC lucky it was only by 7 points. Brady could do anything he wanted too.

The Chiefs are a good team. They are not a great team. Maybe one day.

      • Kerouac says:

Kerouac agrees with your original post yesterday, CG: the swiss were never in the game, contrary to the ‘yeah buts’ and ‘if onlys’ contingent pleas. Every year it’s the same result swiss, only the excuses change.

Broncos should beat the Patri-cheats next Sunday @Denver as the Broncos D is far better than the swiss, and too even a relic like 40-ish Manning is better than an in his prime Alice Smith.

        A few quick takes:

        * “We had injuries”… wah, wah, wah-waaaaaaaaah… so did NE.
An injured & decrepit New England team was still far better (I believe they were using their third LT of the season yesterday, among other injuries.)

        * “We dropped some interceptions”… do tell. Len Dawson threw two ints too vs BUFF the 1/1/67 AFL Championship Game, also dropped… woulda coulda shoulda BUF then, swiss yesterday.

Actually it could just as easily have been worse for the swiss, even with some bad calls that went against them: only several dropped passes by the Pats limited the damage, more unforced errors same as Texans and others committed previously vs the swiss. This time, a real QB as compared the 2nd/3rd-stringers swiss faced regular season playing made a difference.

        * Hey dinkle-berry, did you get your jock back yet from Gronk? He left #29 twisting naked in the wind on that td catch fakeout. No ‘I shoot an arrow into the sky’ prima dona hot dog nonsense yesterday, huh dinkle?

        * travass kelce: didn’t see any of your spaz-dance showboating either… OWNED by the Patriot D.

        * ‘Toast’ Peters got abused yet again, per the usual: he’s been an overhype all season long, targeted more often than any swiss DB because, well, he’s imminently beatable. Defensive Rookie of the Year? What a joke.

If any doubt, check out unbiased research of Pro Football Focus, who rank Toast no better than 4th best with stat FACTS to back it up https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/14/pro-pffs-defensive-rookie-of-the-year-ronald-darby/

It gets tiring reading the local nonsense that turns every swiss player into an all pro (like kelce, who ranks not even in the top 10 among TE’s, yet is erroneously referred an pro bowl caliber player.)

        * avant: the self-aggrandizing ‘me myself and I’ guy pointed to the sky multiple times yesterday… NE pointed at scoreboard.

        * alice smith: still looking for flags every time he runs… like Butkus and Lambert would agree, “put a pink dress on him.”

        * amedola’s hit: BEAUTIFUL! KNOCK THAT SUCKER OUT! That’s old school cool, fool. These modern ballerina’s wouldn’t last a single game playing back in the 1960’s.

        * knile giveth (106 yard td), knile taketh away (fumble)… he is what he is, like the swiss: not ready for prime time

        * 0 sacks and 0 ints by all those ‘paper’ all-pros swiss defense: berry, smith, peters, hali, houston, howard, bailey, poe-thetic.

        * andy reid: his favorite song remains Chicago’s ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?’

2015 now in the books, 2016 appends: look for the swiss to fall back as they always do, 5-11 the prediction here/last place the AFC West behind division winners Oakland Raiders, Osweiler led Broncos, Rivers Chargers next & alice and the swiss cellar.

Still 0 Championships* for Kansas City in 62 years, 1955-2015, football and baseball same…

        🙂

      • Furioso says:

Either you’re one of the elite NFL teams or you’re not. By finally winning a playoff game and then staying in the game against the best NFL QB ever shows the Chiefs stock is definitely rising. We didn’t even have a healthy #1 WR!

It starts again in less than 9 months. Chiefs>

  10. CG says:

Hey Harely and other haters, I just re-read my story. ARE YOU KIDDING ME, ITS LIKE I WATCHED THE GAME EXCEPT IT WASN’T OVER YET..AND WAS HOPING FOR A MIRACLE. Never happened…HARLEY READ IT AGAIN SON…ITS AS CLOSE TO PERFECT ABOUT WHAT WAS TO HAPPEN AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. SO you might want to stop with the ‘he doesn’t know anything about..’ really…again as close to what was ‘too happen’ as humanly possible. The Pats disrespect that proved them right to a certain extent, what Brady would do, what we had to do and didn’t on and on…as if we were watching the game…it hadn’t been played yet. Yes I picked the Chiefs cause I was hoping but the story makes it clear…that was a long shot. I did tease them and won the bet. P.S. I won every playoff game so far…so I know something huh. If Denver and Panthers win I go perfect on this week and last in playoffs..I did lose on Bama they only won by 5 not 7…my bad.

Hey I wanted the Chiefs to step up, they didn’t and couldn’t the other guys just had and have way more talent and confidence…oh yeah they have Tom Brady. We don’t. Again good season and effort by KC.
