On February 22, 2015 Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu stood before Hollywood’s beautiful people at the Dolby Theater to proudly accept the ‘Best Director’ Oscar for his quirky movie BIRDMAN—which would eventually be crowned ‘Best Picture’ of the year…
Now, just one year later, there’s a good chance history might repeat itself.
Inarritu’s latest cinematic offering is the biographical American western revenge film, THE REVENANT.
Set in 1823 and inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is a powerful and epic tale of fur traders and hunters on an expedition through uncharted wilderness always under deadly attack by hostile Indian tribes.
A powerful adventure of betrayal, revenge and the confirmation of the human spirit.
But most of all it is Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass giving the performance of his career in this most intense tale of survival that you have probably ever seen in a motion picture.
One scene will blow your mind!
It has DiCaprio being savagely attacked by a giant black bear. It’s the most brutal man versus beast depiction I’ve ever experienced on the big screen.
It’s a savagely assaulting thriller that pushes the human spirit to the limit through its visually stunning cinematography.
Or as The Hollywood Reporter put it:
“It’s JEREMIAH JOHNSON meets APOCALYPSE NOW!”
Leonardo DiCaprio has already received numerous honors since the film first premiered in exclusive runs this Christmas in New York and Los Angeles.
Matter of fact, Kansas City’s Film Critics Circle named DiCaprio Best Actor for his powerful portrayal.
Also of note is yet another terrific appearance here by villainous Tom Hardy following his high-octane performance in last year’s MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.
If there is ONE movie that MUST be seen on the BIG screen, then THE REVENANT IS that spectacle!
The film will be very much in play this coming Sunday evening where it is one of five movies nominated for Best Picture (Drama) in The Golden Globe Awards.
It should also pick up a number of Oscar nods when the Academy Award nominations are announced on January 14.
THE REVENANT opens ‘wide’ this weekend throughout Kansas City.
My score: A

JACK GOES TO THE MOVIES Friday mornings during Kansas City’s Morning News on 98.1 FM, KMBZ.
I have heard nothing but great, great things about this movie!
I think Leo is Jack Nicholson’s heir apparent. I don’t watch many movies these days but I will not miss this one.
You’ve GOT to see it on theBIG screen, though!!!!!
That scene in the preview where he and the horse ride off the edge of the mountain puts my heart in my throat!
I will only attend for the bear rape scene.
It is my only fetish.
Hate to disappoint you but the bear only has foreplay with Leonardo.
Where in the world did that stupid story start??! A studio play for attention? And BTW how does a female bear commit rape? Ridiculous.
Didn’t do much for the horse either…..
The trailers look great!
Gonna take the kid and do it this Saturday I hope.
Went to see “Star Wars”. Brutal. Finding an Actor/Actress worse than Hayden Christiansen must have been like looking for Dr. Richard Kimble. J.J. Abrams probably kills off Harrison Ford early in that movie and turns a murder mystery into a metaphor for Post Colonial feminism.
Daisy Ridley dresses out at about 92 lbs. soaking wet and has the screen presence of a saw horse. If we just think women in combat will work, then it will!! J.J. Abrams’ politics are on full display here and the critics, simpering, supercilious scourges of our multicultural gods loved it!

(Hey Stomper, I try an never miss an article!)
Abrams no doubt taped this review to the rear view mirror in his Prius, no need to look back now, the war is over. Abrams and his reviewers may indeed love a more slatternly heroine they can drive like Mrs. Daisy here into the Culture War, but, me, I will take Princess Leia in a metal bikini any day of the week.
Next up, Obi Wan Kenobi on White Privilege disrupting “The Force”.
Hilarious! This is why I read this blog.
“…must have been like looking for Dr Richard Kimble.” Great pop culture ref! 🙂
I’m not a fan of the series, saw the first one when it was released, so that’s the extent of my Star Wars history. But I took the kids to see it over Christmas and found it just barely watchable. In a world of friends and clients who went three times, (regular, 3D and IMAX) I was depressed over the three hours of my life lost that I’ll never get back.
Glad to learn you are expanding away from just the American Thinker, even if it is just for comic relief.
Thanks for the kind thoughts.
“It has DiCaprio being savagely attacked by a giant black bear.”
It wasn’t a black bear it was a grizzly. Big difference in that a HUGE black bear is 500 lbs….that is the standard male grizzly.
But looks like a great movie though.
My one complaint with the movie, he had a fire yet ate the liver raw. Of course cow tongue was haute cuisine then too.
We know so little about Glass. Most of what we “know” is conjecture at best.
I saw it this weekend. It really was terrific. Do yourself a favor and see it on the big screen. The movie was wonderfully shot and the locations are incredible. I thought Leo was great, but Tom Hardy steals every scene he’s in. You can’t take your eyes off him. I think this is probably the best picture of the year .
If there is no bear rape I will not partake.
on the lighter side, the Coen Bro’s have a new film being released and another pairing with George Clooney (and Francis McDormand). if the trailers are any indication, “Hail, Ceaser” should be a lot of fun.
