I’m not a big fan of the Walt Disney empire…
So when a local film fanatic from Hyde Park triumphs over the accountants in suits at Disney, I say hooray. And soI urge everyone to see the best movie I’ve seen in 30 years, “PK” – which Disney is only allowing to be shown one more time this year in Kansas City.
The date: Thursday, Oct. 15, 7:30pm at Standees in the Prairie Village Shops.
The Bollywood extravaganza is the highest grossing film in Indian history. It’s about an alien who lands in the desert in India but when he gets beaten up, his remote control “Come get me” device is stolen. And so he has to find clothes, learn the language and retrieve the device from a corrupt Hindu priest. At which point, of course, everyone dances!
I saw the movie in September at a sold out performance during the OmFilmFest and I’m going again.
Think of PK as a combination of The Gods Must Be Crazy, ET, Being There, Slumdog Millionaire and the Marigold Hotel. Dancing aside, they also kick old superstitions and lying priests in the proverbial nuts. (Had the film been made in the US, it might have starred Bishop Finn.)
The punchline: Believe in the God that made you, not the god you created.
I watch more than 150 films a year and this is the best of the best.
Unlike most narratives or docs, PK actually reaches its dramatic arc. Bring one tissue and someone to hug. And then get ready for everyone to dance!
So Disney buys the rights to the highest grossing Indian film of all time and then locks it up in their vault. Bambi and the Disney princesses are effectively in bondage. Which is why it’s such a triumph that Hyde Park impresario, Jerome van Wert and his great team at OmFilmFest.com, secured the rights for an additional showing.
I have no idea how this David versus Goliath showdown came about. However on the heels of the success of OmFilmFest, van Wert is rolling out seasonal mini fests, celebrating independent filmmakers. And we’re one lucky town, to have KIFF, the Ks International Film Festival’s 15th season, Nov. 6-12, showing 80 films (kansasfilm.com, see all the trailers since you won’t need to watch the Chiefs). And now with OMFilmFest.com. Kansas City is 20x better as a film town than Denver.
Do Not Miss “PK” Thursday night! Because unlike Christianity, there are no Second Chances!
Speaking of sneaky and controlling religions – including the “Disney religion” which allegedly showed a priest’s penis in The Little Mermaid (made ya look, Harley) – you no longer can assume you will be able to buy the DVD or watch Disney movies on Netflix.
You can’t!
Disney is taking movies like PK out of circulation. Except for this ONE showing.
See you Thursday.
And even if the Royals don’t make it, remember; at the end everyone dances!
Go TRACY!! So good to see you here!!
I like you plenty, Wilson. Thanks for your encouragement and support. You were instrumental in encouraging me to come back to this site–I give you credit for that. Now if you really want to support me, then come watch this movie tonight–PK. I think it’s fairly safe to say, Harley will not be there. I was half expecting him to write in that he was a groomsman for Michael Eisner…and that he has been IN the Disney vault, and I know nothing.
Harley’s brain was cryogenically frozen at birth and placed next to Walt’s. He is already there.
In two comments and one article, kcconfidential has, in my opinion, an earthy, “boots on the ground”, KC finger-on-the-pulse-Boudica-Warrior-Queen….in the house!
Thanks for that, Chuck. Now if the boys play nice, I will participate more, now that my lawsuit against Cuprum/Louieville Ladder Co. is over. In fact, some day I will post about the goofball judge, who left before my trial was over, “because he had a date with a gal in Alabama for Superbowl weekend, and had already spent $200 moving his flight.” So he turned it over to another judge.
Obviously, I meant Louisville. Time for more coffee! Hope some KCC readers come to this PK movie tonight–it’s cynical about organized religion, right up the alley of most readers of KCC.
Clearly, Chuck, she likes YOU more….
obviously I posted in the wrong place. All this indenting–but the whole point is–which enlightened KCC readers will show up tonight at the movie. I am not working for the OmFilmFest. Jerome van Wert is a friend, and up and coming film empresario. Kind of the Mark Edelman of film. It only takes a few really committed people to make a difference–and in the film world that includes van Wert, plus of course the heroic work of Brian Mossman and Bill Doty, orchestrating the upcoming KIFF film festival, Nov. 6-12, with over 80 indies playing at the new Glenwood Arts (since the creeps at Lane4 and Stan Kroenke kicked them out of Metcalf South.
Thanks for the links! Otherwise, I doubt I would even know about this. Anything Bollywood is always a visual feast. Impressive too that Jerome and his team were able to obtain the rights from Disney. Applause all around!
I am not happy finding out about this now. If I would have found this a little earlier I might have been able to drag the missus with me back to PV for this.
So today will be the only opportunity to watch this in KC?
That’s right, The Dude. Sorry. I wrote about it as soon as I heard Jerome had secured one more showing for OmFilmFest. Dropped what I was doing, had to write a completely separate post for Hearne, who will not link. It was already on my two blogs, JocoPost.com and KcmoPost.com. I did my best.
So just how hard is it to drag that missus by her Amish pony tail back to PV? Hitch her to your wagon? Where in heck do you live that PV, the City of Trees and Center of Their Known Universe, is just too far? Mars???
Hard to find? Nonsense! Any one of you know how to use Google? Available in its entirety on DailyMotion ( http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2nnknl ) and iTunes.
