Glazer: Crazy Royals Yank Another Rabbit Out of Their Hat

tumblr_m0e2k0GXTQ1qzfsnio1_500The Royals were goners, down 6-2 and in sore need of a comeback…

It was the 8th inning and they needed a billion runs. An error by Houston provided the margin and the Royals ended up winning 9-6. Seems like last year all over again. A miracle win in the late innings.

Eric Hosmer was well on his way to being the goat of the series with one hit in 15 at bats, when he hit a game winning or game insurance homer in top of the ninth, a two run blast. It locked up the win, mades him into a hero and sent the Royals to game five in KC.

Houston has no bullpen, so no lead is safe against KC. Plus the  Royals are at home Wednesday with a sea of Blue and tons of momentum.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

14372220Amidst a sea of bad news for the KC sports scene the Royals came through again. It’s over, it’s over, it’s over. Royals will win game 5 in KC. All th emotion and energy is with them now.

Seemed like that Oakland game from last october all over again.

So hang on for another long run. Toronto down 2-0 has won the last two on the road. Now they go home like KC to wrap it up. So its gonna likely be KC vs. Toronto as was predicted to begin with before everything went to heck in a hand basket.

Hang on to your hats and whatever else you hold dear!

I never got the gambling gene, but I can’t imagine thinking one could bet on baseball.

Too many things can happen. Too many things do happen.

Sunday I watched the game wondering how the Chiefs would lose. Expecting it, really, throughout the second half.

Monday I watched the Roylz wondering how they might win. But not expecting anything like we got.

We’ll see Wednesday, I guess. As Yogi Berra said, “Predictions are tough, especially when they involve the future.”

  2. Nick says:

Had a 10:40 tee time yesterday at Shoal Creek. Finished up, had a quick beer with my group and got in the car to head south on I-435, just as the Royals’ 8th started.

    Holy shit.

The damn thing got me so pumped I found myself driving 85-90, weaving in and out of traffic; got to the house in record time, where I sat listening to the radio in the driveway (a perfectly good 60″ LED TV less that 50 feet away, mind you) until the last out.

    That was some fuckin’ baseball.

    • Libertarian says:

Baseball just sounds so right coming from an AM radio.

      • kriskle says:

Oh, I disagree. I was one of the unfortunate whose cable package does not include MLB Network. I felt like a blind man at a porno movie. Sure, I could hear everything, but it wasn’t the same.

On top of that, we couldn’t seem to get 810’s crappy signal inside our house to get Dave O’Brien and John Kruk, so we listened to Ryan and Phys on 610.

Well, they did a fine job. But guess what? Conversation during the game absolutely ceased. We were afraid of missing something.

Not so with TV where we get to see what’s coming, and we are free to discuss it while it’s happening.

OK, so go ahead and feel nostalgic about the “good ol’ days” of radio baseball. I’d rather see it in high-def.

        • miket. says:

gotta say that when given the choice, AM radio is my first choice.

i guess may be nostalgia or tradition. baseball and radio broadcasts go back a long, long time – 1920s? and when you think about great baseball play-by-play guys, they’re all radio first, tv second, if at all.

and to that point, one thing about radio you do not get with tv, is that play-by-play. you can be doing anything else and not have to look up. tv broadcasters in general don’t describe the action, they let the pictures do that. you have to keep your eyes on the tv.

the royals’ broadcast team could be better… but oh well…that’s whole other topic.

          go royals!

          • Libertarian says:

            You nailed it-nostalgia and tradition.

Static during a perfect triple play because mom drove under a bridge on I-70 is pure Americana.

I do agree about 610 doing a better job. At least give the score before you go to commercial.

          • kriskle says:

So you got your choice Wednesday night, Mike. You gonna turn off the TV and listen on AM radio?

          • Nick says:

Listening to a game on the radio as opposed to watching it on the tube is a personal decision, one informed –I’m guessing– by age; those of us who grew up in the late 50s/early 60s tend to enjoy drawing up the scenes in our minds given the outlines of the plays by the Am broadcasters.

…’course, I know some other old farts who just chillax in barcaloungers in front of a tube with a beer and spend the whole game bitchin’ about the team.

Whatevah, as the young ‘uns say.

          • kriskle says:

Oh, come on, Nick. The generation that grew up in the ’50s and ’60s were the first generation hooked on TV.

“Drawing up scenes in our minds”? Heck, our parents didn’t even want to do that. They rushed out to buy black-and-white TV sets as fast as they could, while all those wonderful radio shows that had them “drawing up scenes in our minds” died a quick death.

Yeah, there are those who SAY they like baseball on radio better, but when push comes to shove, they’ll be watching on the tube with the rest of us.

          • Nick says:

            @kriskle

Generalizations, my man. Our family didn’t even own a TV until ’68. And at that point I was out the door headed to the SW Asia Games, where I saw even less boob tube.

And, yes, I still prefer AM baseball to the tube, much as I prefer books to the silly movies they often become.

          • kriskle says:

Thought occur to you that your family wasn’t like most families? Or do you really think it’s possible that unlike your family, practically every family in America had at least one TV set by 1968.

Look, if you prefer AM radio to TV, fine. If you also want to tell us that you only read books, and never go to “silly movies”, that’s fine too.

But do you have to be such a pseudo-intellectual snob about it?

Or do you really think it’s impossible to turn a great book into a great movie, even if, because of the nature of the very different media, they aren’t exactly the same?

Or are am I just not quite as bright as you are since I can enjoy both?

          • Nick says:

            @kriskle

Boy are you touchy; never imputed anything, that’s your own bias. Or, more likely, insecurity.

Watch TV, dude – who cares? My point was that your contention “Yeah, there are those who SAY they like baseball on radio better, but when push comes to shove, they’ll be watching on the tube with the rest of us.” was invalid on its face.

  3. CG says:

One almost strange thing I think we all have noticed. The incredible lack of attention to KC vs. Houston in the big ‘media.’ ESPN and MLB got its with with Cubs,Mets,LA and St. Louis in this post season. Of course all their games get the major look. We have been on ch. 306 and 75 I believe FX1 or 2 or whatever…buried. In fact pending on your cable package many KC folks could not get those channels and couldn’t watch the games at home. Not fair huh. I’m sure the ratings weren’t very good nationally with that location on the dial. Whats surprising is Houston is a big market, though we are not. The fact the Royals are the American League Champs and last years darling didn’t count.

Plus they gave us B guys in the booth some were even C and most unheard of cover guys. Pete Rose had fun with his before and after calls. I was shocked the playoff games we had were not on a major channel. I was looking all over for the games. Were you?

Last night after the Monday Night NFL game ESPN did baseball and gave the other games 90% of their time. Royals were an “oh yeah” they came back too.

One reason KC is so in love with the Royals and their second season run is respect for our team and our city. Would be nice to get that more from the national media. I think these Royals have earned it.

As for Wednesday nites game. Who knows. I can see Houston’s bullpen is weak. They were in September. I think if their starter doesn’t shut us down through 8 it will more than likely be a Royals victory. These guys feed off emotion and especially at home with a comeback win like that one.

    • Mark Goetz says:

“We have been on ch. 306 and 75 I believe FX1 or 2 or whatever…buried.”

So has Tor/Tex. It’s not about popularity. It’s about what network owns the playoff broadcast rights for what league. NL is exclusively TBS, and AL is FOX/FOX sports affiliates. ESPN has only had one game, the AL Wildcard. The World Series will be on FOX. If you think the Royals are getting shafted in some manner, it’s because you’re choosing to see it that way.

    • Frank says:

You might have trouble with large numbers like 75 and 306, Craig, but I found the game rather easily. I’m sure your head explodes when there’s a fourth digit that you have to remember.

  4. uhou eaarley says:

yes…glaze…the broadcasters were horrible. Where do they get these guys?
must be either minor league broadcasters or they are cheap to pay.
They stuck us on mlb network but that was because they sports fox Midwest
didn’t want to interrupt a documentary about something from st. Louis.
Moose said it so right…”WE AIN’T LOSING THIS F*CKING GAME!!!!!!!!
After ateending over half the games this season…handing out over 100 baseballs…
and we get to this 5th game….all I gotta say is what Harley made famous
on kcc and other blogs when the chips were down…
    ITS OVER….ITS OVER….ITS OVER….ITS OVER…..
not really….look for Harley in rivals…we’ll be toasting a big big royals win
Wednesday night….then down to mcfaddens for a free beer on the Hos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I fly like an eagle…
    Harley.
    glaze….say this 10 times Wednesday!!!!!!! ITS OVER…ITS OVER…ITS OVER….

  5. kriskle says:

“It’s over, it’s over, it’s over. Royals will win game 5 in KC. All th emotion and energy is with them now.”

Which doesn’t mean doo-doo to a tree, and anybody whose actually paid attention to sports with a functioning brain should know that.

Have you forgotten after the thorough 10-0 thrashing of the Giants in Game Six, “all the emotion and energy” was with the Royals then, too? And no way they were going to lose!

That’s typical high school fanboy nonsense, thinking that there is really only one team out there — our “good guys.” Well, there’s another pretty good team in the other dugout, and they’ll have something to say about the outcome.

Bottom line: Nothing is certain in sports. Johnny Cueto had better be on, and the rest of the Royals will need their “A” games as well. And even then, they could still lose.

Anything can happen in one game.

    • miket. says:

“Anything can happen in one game.”

AMEN! to that. damn right about cueto. personally have little faith in him. maybe in a do or die, win or go home, scenario something magical happens and he becomes unhittable. guess we’ll see.

    • the dude says:

Cueto is gonna lay an egg as usual in a KC uniform.
      Ye baseball gods have spoken.

      • kriskle says:

He could. Unless he doesn’t. All I ask is that he is serviceable. Keeps us in the game through six. Then the rest of the guys will take it from there.

  6. miket. says:

kriskle… for games like this, i’ll have the tv and on, tv sound muted. nice thing about this is the tv transmission is several seconds behind the radio. i have just “that” much time to hear it, scramble to see the screen, unmute and watch it. i generally walk around with two remotes… milliseconds count.

    • kriskle says:

So you are going to do both? Not quite the choice you laid out, Mike.

      • miket. says:

it’s a big game and for those i can have my cake and eat it. tv on, sound off, radio volume up. gives me just enough time to see the big plays that can decide a game.
never said i don’t watch at all… only that i prefer radio.

  7. Trevor says:

I listened to the Royals game on AM but put in a VHS tape of “The Munsters” episode where Herman tries out for the Dodgers. It was great to watch even without the sound.

  8. Kerouac says:

It’s been awhile since the Chiefs won a ‘World Championship’, their only (if you blinked or weren’t yet born to suffer, might have missed it 45 years ago.) Case MLB 2015 post season, ‘World Series’ hopefuls have dwindled to seven, each uninitiated the process an successful finish as Sisyphus is to pushing boulders.

Close to home, now but one contender remains the ‘Show Me State’… so long Cardinals; if Hollywood wrote the perfect script, Cubs vs Royals ‘World Series’ the storybook end that would leave everyone crying, one good reason if not the other.

Between the remaining Cubs (107), Royals (30), Mets (29) , Dodgers (27), Bluejays (22), Rangers/Senators (never, 54) and Astros (never, 53) 400 years combined no-Championship woe; will be a winner 2015, someone long overdue gets off the snide.

    🙂

  9. Kerouac says:

    “400 years”

    – 322 years… it just seems like more

    😉

  10. SteelyDanMan says:

Calling it: Cubs versus Royals in the 2015 World Series.

Honestly, as much as I would like to see the Cubs actually win for the first time in eons, the Royals will pull through and finally win the Pennant again.

  11. CG says:

We will see today…. anything is possible.

    • kriskle says:

Is this the same guy who wrote: “It’s over, it’s over, it’s over. Royals will win game 5 in KC. All th emotion and energy is with them now.”?

  12. Furioso says:

A lot of people don’t realize Toronto is by far the best team and will undoubtedly win the World Series.
