Someone asked me the other day about the movie EVEREST…
He’d seen that it was playing only in IMAX and thought of it as a documentary of sorts—like something NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC might have produced.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
EVEREST is a harsh adventure drama inspired by the incredible true events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain.
The movie follows two separate commercial expeditions which found themselves challenged beyond their limits to fulfill their mountain climbing-client’s goals of ultimate achievement.
However getting to the top of Everest was one thing.
Making it back down to their combined base camps presented an entirely different obstacle during one of the fiercest snow storms to ever hit Mount Everest.
It was a test of the harshest of elements ever encountered by climbers who faced nearly impossible obstacles in a breathtaking struggle for survival.
Sadly eight of them were lost on the mountain and those who made it back carried scars that will be with them for the rest of their lives.
EVEREST, the movie is made up of an impressive cast including Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington.
But make no mistake, it is the incredible cinematography that steals this film.
Some of the height and climbing scenes had me on the edge of my seat.
And the fact that it’s based on the real life events of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster makes all that unfolds on the screen even more dramatic and SPECTACULAR!
EVEREST opened this past weekend exclusively on IMAX and on Premium Large Format Screens to about 550 engagements in north America.
AND THIS Friday Universal Pictures launches the movie nationwide and makes it available to theaters everywhere in both 2D and 3D formats.
So while I am often down on 3D and its associated up charges, I’m recommending it for THIS motion picture! The incredible effects achieved in the three dimensional process here are definitely well worth the extra two or three bucks.
My rating—a grueling: B.

So was it better than the TV movie Into Thin Air or did they do the typical overdramatic Hollywood treatment?
However, when Kormákur was initially approached about the project, the proposal didn’t include the details of Into Thin Air. As Kormákur said, that story has been told.
This sounds weird to not include those details into the movie.
Sorry, didn’t see TV’s ‘INTO THIN AIR’ but I wouldn’t say they made the movie over dramatic. At least they didn’t put a ‘happy Hollywood ending’ on it……
Uh, this story would be hard to make a happy ending unless losing your nose and a few other extremities is considered a ‘happy ending’.
the National Geographic film, shot in Imax, that accompanied the team led by Breashears, was harrowing enough for me. but this does sound good. Mt. Everest is fascinating.
