I was not at all prepared for just how intense and violent things would get in this movie…
After all the movie stars Owen Wilson—who is usually an easy going kinda guy.
But in NO ESCAPE he helms an intense international political action thriller that’ll have you on the edge of your seat for much of the film’s 103 minute running time.
Originally entitled THE COUP for an earlier March 2015 release, NO ESCAPE starts out innocently enough.
Owen Wilson as Jack Dwyer with wife Lake Bell and their two young daughters are on an incredibly long flight to some unidentified southeast Asian country.
Owen’s engineering job in Austin, Texas has blown up and he opts to accept a waterworks tech opportunity in this third world country.
But what follows would almost make one think of the place as really being in a fourth world.
Barely has the family settled in at the country’s only western-style hotel when all hell breaks lose.
When making a quick newspaper run to the city center, Wilson suddenly finds himself trapped in the middle of a violent political coup with foreigners being a major target.
Now what?
His family is still holed up inside the hotel and he is being hunted like a dog while fleeing from the murderous rebels.
He makes it to the hotel alright but so do the lowlifes with blood on their minds.
What follows is a nail biting, extremely intense attempted escape from this frantic nightmare.
Their only hope is a mysterious stranger (Pierce Brosnan) whom they had first met on their flight. A man who really seems to know the lay of the land…
“There is no good or bad here. Just get your family the hell out of here, Jack.”
So who is he REALLY?
Just another world traveler or a British secret service agent working in partnership with the C.I.A.?
Suffice it to say the family’s attempt at seeking refuge at the American Embassy isn’t the answer. Everyone there is killed before the family reaches the compound.
And Bond-like Pierce Brosnan—well, we lose him too.
It’s a gripping, non-stop journey along the lines of TAKEN.
It addresses the question as to what extremes one would go to save their family?
And some of the answers here are not pretty.
Releasing the movie during the box office dog days of late August makes one wonder whether its distributor has much faith in it. This film deserves better—like mid to late September or October maybe.
However that’s just my humble opinion.
The very R-rated, frantic NO ESCAPE scores a gut-wrenching B+.
Thanks for the spoilers.
Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking the same thing.
Sounds interesting but I prefer Wilson in comedies.
Since you told us pretty much everything that happens, I don’t need to see it. Thanks.
Glad to have been of service…….
(It’s actually about the same that the trailer told you.)
The trailer told us the whole embassy and Pierce got annihilated? Doubtful.
You should work a little more on being a good reviewer and less on being a smart *ss.
