Craig Glazer: Face It, The Big 12 Just Plain Sucks

01f018297c75d55a06d7f35ec51eeca913572bb41eebf3b17f75e355ac85db1eOh how the once mighty have fallen…

The Big 12 – once known as a college football powerhouse – is all but gone. It used to boast national championship contenders – and winners – like Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

Now all they have are nice little teams like K-State, Baylor and TCU.

Sure, those teams have nice records, but they’re no threat to win a national anything. Or get anywhere near the final dance. Worse yet, now Big 12 basketball is fading as well.

Only KU is even mentioned as a top notch team from the Big 12.

However KU has also fallen as of late with two early exits from March Madness in round two. Last year they were taken out by a just ok Stanford team in round two and this year against the Wichita Shockers.

Not only did KU go out, they went out ugly.

They got demolished on national TV by the 7th seeded Shockers 78-65.

Face it, KU is all the Big 12 has to offer as far as a national championship caliber basketball team. It’s been that way for years. KU won it all in 2008 and was in the championship game in 2012, losing to Kentucky.

And Kansas is the only sports franchise in our metro that is elite. In basketball that is – KU football is as always terrible. It’s hard to believe they won the Orange Bowl just seven years ago.

"Johnny Football"

“Johnny Football”

The football side of the Big 12 is really sad as of late.

Nebraska is now a Big 10 team and just ok. Texas A&M would have given us the excitement of Johnny Football but they’re in the SEC now. Speaking of which, Missouri is a winner of two straight division titles in the SEC.

Mizzou has become one of the NFL’s strong feeders today.

Jeremy Maclin

Jeremy Maclin

Even the Chiefs best receiver in last 30 years, Jeremy Maclin is from MU.

Oklahoma was 8-5 this past season and Texas only 6-7!

Wow, have those two programs faded into the trash can.

Yep, it’s now the mighty TCU at 12-1 and Baylor at 11-2 leading the way. And neither were a national anything.

KU will be back with a better team next year and hopefully be a real No. 2 or No. 1 seed in the NCAA Dance. This year nobody even mentioned them as a Final Four team.

Iowa State was mentioned but lost in GAME ONE – as did three other highly ranked teams. Oklahoma and West Virginia are still in it but not for long.

So whats the answer?

Should everyone just bail for another conference?

No.

How about better coaching and better recruiting?

really??? little premature there craig. to my knowledge, he hasn’t caught one single pass from any chiefs QB. put the brakes on before you anoint the guy Pope, dude.

    • CG says:

Good point Mike. I ‘expect’ him to be very good if he stays injury free…we did have Tony but he was a tight end. As for the headline here. I don’t write those, Hearne does and he likes to go a bit overboard. I don’t think the Big Twelve ‘sucks’ they have just fallen and hard. Hopefully they will come back.

I wish MU would have stayed. They made a great move for their football program which is just a win away from being elite. If they continue to play at this level. Good for them.

“Even the Chiefs best receiver in last 30 years, Jeremy Maclin is from MU.”

First 5 seasons in the NFL:

        Player 1:
        Total yards – 4771
        Total catches – 343
        TD’s – 36
        1000+ yard seasons – 1

        Player 2:
        Total yards – 4927
        Total catches – 356
        TD’s – 36
        1000+ yard seasons – 3

        Question: What stats are D. Bowe’s & what stats are J. Maclin’s?

        Hyperbole much, Glaze?

        • CG says:

Maclin is a far better receiver today. No question. Bowe never reached his potential either his fault, the quarterbacks or coaching…Bowe never a big factor in the AFC offensive stars…ever…sorry.

        • Orphan of the Road says:

          Dropped passes while open stat?

          • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Missing the point, Glaze. Maclin isn’t a difference maker, either. The NFL is all about production, not perception. Maclin’s numbers were NO better than Bowe’s in his first 5 seasons. That isn’t an opinion, that’s a FACT. I agree he should be an upgrade from what Bowe is now, but don’t expect any 1,000+ yard/12-15 TD seasons from Maclin in this offense.

        • hahhararley says:

maclin had some great receivers also on eagles.
He’ll be #1 receiver unless chiefs gets some baLLs and
draft someone like cooper who woul make them
          super bowl condenders.
will clark pull the string…if he follows his dad NO..
if he follows reid …YES….theres’ others out there
two…add them to our tight end and you’re looking
          at playoff contenders for years.

  2. CG says:

I was watching ESPN this morning and just to let you all know those guys said the same thing about our basketball teams. Ugly. I mean just a couple years ago K State with Frank Martin was on the move upward, Texas had a guy named ‘Kevin’ and Iowa State was making some real noise. All but gone today.

    • Karl says:

      “Texas had a guy named ‘Kevin’ . . .”

Yeah, that was only eight years ago. Heck, why can’t every Big 12 team recruit a guy like that every year?

  3. the dude says:

Cpt. Obvious here stating stuff that even harlinator knows to be fact.
Thank you for your great and deep insight, Cpt. Obvious.

  4. Karl says:

OK, as I look at the Sweet Sixteen, I see five from the ACC, three from the Pac 12, two from the Big 12, two from the Big 10, and one each from the SEC, Big East, West Coast, and Missouri Valley conferences.

  5. The Word says:

The Word on the street is that Alabama is willing to give Marshall anything he wants to come there.

Now this is Alabama. Not really a basketball school. Over the last five years you saw Mike Anderson, Frank Martin move to the SEC. Ole Miss is building a new arena that should open next year. Texas A&M, repeat A&M has the No.3 recruiting class in the country.

Seems like the SEC is taking basketball seriously.

Can one conference be the best football and basketball conference in the country at the same time? Seems like the SEC wants to find out.

    • Karl says:

There are also a couple of brothers named “Koch” who might have something to say before Marshall packs his bags. In fact, the Shockers play in a place called Charles Koch Arena.

I recall a few years back when T. Boone Pickens signed a blank check and handed it over to Bill Self to lure Self back to Self’s Oklahoma State alma matter. Suddenly, KU started sending Brink’s trucks to Self’s house, and Self decided he was happy just where he was.

Now, I have no idea what’s in Marshall’s mind, but then again, neither does anyone else. He’s already making nearly $2 million a year, and maybe he thinks that’s enough, and the “challenge” of rebuilding Alabama just isn’t worth it. Or maybe he doesn’t think that way.

But remember, the Tide threw open the bank vault and promised Anthony Grant everything he could possibly need or want.

  6. Jess says:

Man I wish I could get excited about basketball, there is a lot of excitement with March Madness and I could not care less… Even when my team is playing in the tournament I still just do not care. I do think it is a shame because the tournament is the best post season tourney of ANY sport, I just do not care about that sport.

    • the dude says:

Rumor is the Varsity National Squat Thrust Championships is on the ESPNOcho tonight. If you can’t get excited for that you have no pulse.

  7. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Wow. Kentucky put a severe ass whipping on WVU, and Wichita State was summarily slapped around by Notre Dame.
