Hearne: The Anatomy of a Sports Rivalry, Hating on KU-MU

hc kuIt’s funny how small town mindsets can compare to big city thinking…

Case in point, the manner in which the Lawrence Journal World treats the subject of the historic Kansas versus Missouri sports rivalry – you know, KU-MU – the so-called Border War.

Athletic competition between the University of Kansas and University of Missouri – dates back to the 1890s. Sports Illustrated and others claimed that up until 2011 that it was the oldest Division One football rivalry west of the Mississippi.

But the rivalry went away in 2012 after MU bailed on the Big 12 for the SEC.

And because Kansas was pissed and felt jilted – with the Big 12 facing possible extinction – it has since refused to play Missouri in football or in basketball. You know, the games that matter.

Small time/small town town thinking at its finest, right?

However, isn’t time supposed to heal all wounds…or most anyway?

Because since then, the Big 12 has righted itself. KU no longer fears being trapped on the outside looking in and losing the $20 million or so it gets from the Big 12 conference. Missouri gets a bit more from the SEC, but life goes on – no harm, no foul.

And yet KU – and the fair City of Lawrence, Kansas – can’t seem to get over itself.

Mu-ku-borderwarFor example, recent headlines in the Lawrence Journal World and Kansas City Star demonstrated just how dramatically different the thinking in the two towns can be.

On January 31st the Star ran a front page story in its sports section quoting KU basketball coach Bill Self as mourning the loss of the MU rivalry.

“It’s hard to replace,” Self was quoted.

“Self concedes that the loss of a historic rival has been a net negative for his program,” the Star added.

Meanwhile back in Small Thinking Land, the Journal World downplayed the loss of the rivalry with Missouri that same day with the headline, “KU-KSU rivalry ‘intense, exciting.”

Journal World publisher Dolph Simons Jr

Journal World publisher Dolph Simons Jr

But that wasn’t enough for the newspaper’s editorial petty posse.

Because out of the clear blue sky today comes a Journal World editorial, “Stand Firm.”

“Kansas Athletics officials should stand by their decision to end KU’s rivalry with the University of Missouri” it adds.

Make no mistake, odds are that boss hog Journal World publisher Dolph Simons‘ fingerprints are all over this bit  of petty, nonsensical thinking.

Check it:

“For years, Missouri officials had hoped and lobbied for admission to the Big 10 Conference, but being denied that, they pushed for and gained acceptance into the Southeast Conference. They turned their back on the Big 12, which they helped found, and their long history with the Big 8 Conference and its predecessor conferences,” the editorial contends.

“When MU elected in 2011 to sever its Big 12 ties, Kansas University officials thought it best to discontinue one of the nation’s longest standing, most historical and most colorful intercollegiate athletic rivalries. If Missouri wanted to leave the Big 12, why should KU continue to keep the Tigers on the Jayhawk schedules?”

Jilted lover syndrome, anybody?

Look, at the time, with the Big 12 on the ropes, there was arguably a veneer of legitimacy in KU being pissed at MU for leaving. Kansas appeared far less capable of landing a berth in sports conference with anywhere near the prestige or financial rewards of the Big 12 or SEC. And they were understandably frustrated that their dreaded rival landed such a sweet deal.

But in reality it was little more than sour grapes.

Because does anybody actually think if KU had been given a similar option at the time they wouldn’t have leapt at the opportunity?

Of course they would have.

But now three, four years later Kansas – or at least the local newspaper – is still stewing.

“With (the athletic director of Missouri’s) resignation, there are bound to be some who call for a renewal of the KU-MU athletic rivalry,” the Journal World continues. “Most of the pressure is likely to come from Kansas City business interests who want the millions of dollars generated by KU-MU football and basketball games, and sports writers and broadcasters who want something controversial to write and talk about.”

hi-res-59333ad1ffd140e54972dfb0a3d24a27_crop_northHold it right there, Dolphy.

If I’m not mistaken, it will be the two universities that benefit most by the millions of dollars in revenue that would be generated by the renewal of the rivalry and the games.

And by the way, it’s those same “Kansas City business interests” who shell out big bucks for tickets to KU basketball games (that require millions in annual donations to KU’s athletics department). Not to mention the tens of millions donated to upgrade Allen Field House and Memorial Stadium where one of the worst teams in all of college football performs.

And as for the sportswriters and broadcasters “who want something controversial to talk about,” give me a break. Like the sportswriters and broadcasters in Lawrence don’t want or won’t benefit by that very same thing?

Allow me to let me let the Journal World and Simons in on a little secret:

The sportswriters and broadcasters in Kansas City have plenty of controversies to write and talk about. Far more than those in Lawrence who don’t even field a single reporter to cover the Chiefs, Royals or Sporting KC games, even though local sports fans in Lawrence follow those teams just as closely as the sports fans in Kansas City do.

11022598376_9be04f3431_oLike it or not, Lawrence is basically a suburb of Kansas City.

And if you go to a sports bar here and the Chiefs or Royals are playing, there’s a 99 percent probability that those games will be showing on their television screens.

The sportswriters and broadcasters in KC don’t need a measly three KU-MU games a year to keep their home fires fires burning – their cups runneth over.

It’s the Journal World that sorely needs those games to breath some life into its sports pages and make them more interesting and entertaining.

And replacing a few AP stories and columns by its sports editor advising locals not to get too down on the football team and going on and on about insignificant trivia about KU basketball and football can and does get really old at times.

MU Antlers

MU Antlers

So hating on Missouri for three or six weeks a year would definitely be an upgrade.

With the exception of football probably, to be blunt.

However that could change!

“Hopefully, KU athletic officials will continue to seek schedules and contracts with top-flight athletic teams from throughout the country rather than cave in to please Kansas City merchants, sports writers and those in Columbia who turned their backs on the Big 12 conference,” the editorial concludes.

everybodywinsThat last paragraph’s so petty it almost had to come from Dolph Simons.

Because the people who are going to benefit the most, be the most pleased and have the most to gain are the merchants and sportswriters right here in good old Lawrence, Kansas.

That’s because tens of thousands of Kansas Citians and people from all over the states of Missouri and Kansas will pay out the wazoo for tickets to the games here. They’ll fill the hotel rooms, pack the restaurants and buy stuff from local shopkeepers and store owners.

What about all that does the Journal World not get?

The atmosphere in Lawrence will be electric and what was heralded as one of the oldest rivalries in college sports will once again bask in the national limelight where it deserves to be.

And what’s wrong with all that?

  1. One Guy says:

Out of conference games just never rise to the excitement level of conference games. There’s less on the line. How heated is the Missouri-Illinois rivalry. It would be about the same thing. In time, the people who remember the Big 8/Big 12 days will become fewer and fewer, it’ll just be a footnote.

It’s unfortunate, but I don’t think it’ll ever be like it used to be. And if we’re honest, most years the rivalry was never that competitive in basketball or football. It would be even less so today.

    Best to move on.

    • admin says:

      Good points, One Guy…

I think the KU-MU rivalry goes well beyond that of MU-Illinois though.

It dates back to the Civil War and before.

You’re right about football, but it was only in 2006 I think that KU-MU was HUGE nationally. And while the chances of that happening anytime soon are remote, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that KU football could improve enough to make it a horse race.

Similarly, KU held sway over MU in basketball, but Mizzou won its share of games.

Here’s what happened the last time they competed:

“In the final year of the rivalry, both teams win at home with remarkable come-from-behind wins. Missouri overcame a late 8-point deficit with less than three minutes to go in the game in Columbia, en route to a 74-71 victory. The Jayhawks return the favor by overcoming a 19-point second half deficit to force overtime in Lawrence, ultimately winning 87-86. In both games, Kansas and Missouri were ranked in the top 10.”

And the overall football win/loss record between the teams is quite close.

  2. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

It’s over, time to move on. This has been rehashed so000 many times…..

    • admin says:

      It’s far from over, Guy…

Why do you think Bill Self is dropping headlines about what a great loss it is and the Lawrence newspaper’s lead editorial is totally paranoid that all the rich guys in KC and sportswriters are gonna try to dredge it back up?

They definitely will play again once KU figures out a way to save face from acting so immaturely.

      • hahhararley says:

bill self will be gone before mu and ku plays again.
why should mu lower itself to play a second rate broke
        school like ku ??????????????????????????????????
        its over…get o er it harene….

  3. hahhararley says:

STFU KU FANS…..your university is on the brink of financial distress
and all you think about is a football/basketball that mu fans could care less
    about.
Go play in your beautiful stadium…and play in the barn….MU has a quarter
trillion dollars to build new facilities.
Go take a lecture in a room crowded with 100 people in a room to hold
40 because you have no money at ku.
build your new dorms and gie bill his jet…while the school crumbles
    apart.
and for us mu fans…we’ll sitand laugh as your school becomes the
    joke of the big6/8/10/12.
    If I ws a ku student/alumni/athletic director/curator….I SURE AS
HELL BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT PAYING BILLS AFTER THE
NEXT ROUND OF CUTS THAN PLAYING A BASKETBALL GAME
OR A FOOTBALL GAME YOU’LL LOSE BY 40 POINTS.
We know ku misses us. Who ya got left….Ia. State…Ks. State…2 powerhouses?
we said good bye and good riddance long ago…now go play in your ku
sandbox and cry because when it came crunch time no league wanted
you and if you didn’t go back to the “texas” league youd beplaying
Maryville and central Missouri right now.
    Cry babies…get over it.
MIZ ZOU SEC…….yes…football is king and the money is rolling
in at Columbia. Go see what incredible improvements have been
made and how the city of Columbia is growing.
Lawrence will always be a dusty sign on the highway….
    a big nothing.
MU wants nothing to do with you. Heck…we have agame
at arrowhead with BYU….what does kuhave…zilch..nada…nothing…
but a big unpaid bill that’s coming due.

    • hahhararley says:

come on hearne…did anyone outside Kansas or Missouri
      care about the rivalry.
except for you and the little journal…no ones said a thing
      in years.
stop whining. no one gave a crap before…no one cares
      now.
heck…the east and west coast papers didn’t even cover the games.
      go play in traffic.

      • admin says:

        Memories are short, H Man…

And you’re right, the world is not clamoring for the series to resume. However people in Missouri and Kansas want it back and if and when it does resume – and it’s only a matter time really – it will draw eyeballs. Especially if Mizzou ever fields a decent basketball team (they lost to UMKC for gosh sake) and KU fields a decent football team.

In the meantime, both schools will benefit – both financially and, you know, aesthetically

        • hahhararley says:

Missouri would need a bigger chunk of money
          to play in arrowhead.
          They aren’t chumps anymore.
KU is looking for loose change right now ….
          while MU bathes in millions….
          give mu 5 million…and we’ll show up.
          til then….keep wishing ku fans.

  4. hahhararley says:

let me make this point again hearne…according to sources…mizzou athletic
department is brining in close to 90-100 million dollars a year.
poor ku is worried a bout 20.
I think the move by mu to the sec was as brilliant a move as your
buddy mitt Romney not running for prez again/111111111111111111 hahahahahah!
    Best decisions by MU
1, moving out of big 12 junkhouse to sec
    2. getting alden out of a.d. position.

  5. Frank says:

So, I shot you in the head. There was blood and brain matter all over the place. It looked like you would surely be dead. But you are back on your feet and all your friends are doing well too. As for me, I’m pretty lonely now. So how about we get together again and let bygones be bygones. No harm no foul.
Does that about sum it up Tiger, I mean Hearne

    • hahhararley says:

      FRANK….see a psychiatrist…you make chuck seem sane.

    • admin says:

      Wow, Frank…

Your last name wouldn’t be James would it?

BTW, I went to Arizona and living in Lawrence amongst all the KU fervor is beyond tiresome.

That said, this was hardly a case of somebody being shot in the head.

It was a case of a sinking ship and every rat in the boat looking for a safe way out. Missouri and Nebraska and Colorado just happened to be more successful at dodging the bullet.

If KU had found an equally cool out, they’d have taken it.

      No gunplay involved, big guy.

      Just desperation.

      No harm, no foul.

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Shut up Frank, it’s YOUR coach publicly making a statement about missing the MU rivalry now.

  6. Danny says:

KU received more from the Big XII ($23M) than Missouri received from the SEC ($20.9M).

    Source: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11007094/sec-distributes-record-2928-million-revenue

    • admin says:

There are some differing reports on this, Danny…

But either way, both received $20 mill and change last year. However there may have been some other perks for MU. And clearly they’re in a more prestigious conference.

Enabling them to bilk boosters for money to improve their stadium, for example.

About all KU could muster was to take out the track now that Rock Chalk Park is the home of KU’s track team

      • Danny says:

What differing reports? Those numbers were released by the conferences themselves.

        • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

And don’t forget that KU’s share was a bit bigger due to the reduced payouts to WVU & TCU. Also, those payouts were before the SEC Network. Once those dollars start rolling in, Mizzou could be seeing an extra 15 million per year.

Regardless, the rivalry is over with, unless the teams are forced to somehow play in the post season, which I believe has happened in baseball and softball? Take a wild guess who got the better of those games….

    • Frank says:

Danny, people who don’t understand that analogies aren’t literal aren’t going to know that 23 is greater than 20

      • admin says:

Harley is somewhat right on this, Frank…

In more ways than the obvious, Mizzou is way ahead of KU in terms of money, prestige – you name it.

And remember, I’m supposed to be the KU homer!

    • WarriorBigSplash says:

Was this before or after the SEC Network? It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

  7. The Truth says:

Harley’s comments are exactly why KU fans don’t want to play Mizzou. Outside of the FUN of watching a game/cheering for your team. So many People spew all kinds of angry crap around the whole thing.

Mizzou fans are feeling proud and redeemed by their fantastic showing in the SEC East, so they act like they are better than KU fans right now…, and that’s saying something when we know how obnoxious KU fans are!

Point is, KU and their fans have nothing to gain by playing MU. They can’t beat them in football, and they are supposed to win in basketball…. a sport that is built for the upset.

Lose Lose situation, and you get taunted by the person who left you? Easy to understand why they don’t play.

Really when you think about it, it’s the same situation as Mayweather vs Pacquio. Mayweather has everything to lose, nothing to win. So he’s pushed it off, pushed it off until they pay him more money than Pac Man.

That might be the answer to push KU, offer them 75% of the gate for all games. Money talks right?

    • admin says:

      It’s going to happen, Truth…

We all know that, don’t we?

Who cares if MU or KU fans look down on the other team’s fans? That’s not a negative, that adds to the rivalry.

All the more reason to start it back up!

      • hahhararley says:

you don’t know sh*t hearne…another fairy tale story like
        the rest of your stories.
We’ve heard it all….bill self wants to play Missouri.
Why doesn’t he play duke or n Carolina or Gonzaga and
        create a rivalry there?
bill’s a big baby…can’t get his way so he pouts.
great bball coach…poor loser as a sportsman.
hasn’t he got anything better to do than bring up
old worn out stories. Oh..sorry…I was talking about
        self…not hearne.
where’s the jewel theif hearne? finish that story then
        move on….
til then….enjoy that little town of Lawrence and all
        it has to offer!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahaha!!!!!!

        • admin says:

You must have hit your head again, H…

Missouri has been on record for years as wanting to renew the rivalry. And why not?

They’re the ones that ran off with Prince Charming – no skin off their dicks.

It’s KU that got left at home to scrub the floors…that is until the Big 12 sprang (back?) to life.

It’s a silly grudge that does nobody any good and is costing KU money. And we all know how those greedy bastards in the KU athletics department worship at the altar of the almighty buck!

          • hahhararley says:

mu not playing ku costs ku millions of dollars.
MU doesn’t need ku to bring in the big bucks.
go to a mu game in Columbia….the sec has
set mu into another economic class and to
play ku again would be like ku playing
            Johnson county community college.
we said bye bye ku…now go play the
wretched teams left in the big 12 and wish
you had a big pay day like mu to improve that
hole you call a football stadum.
good luck….with ia.state and the rest of the
big 12….we’ve moved on and moved up.
we want nothing ever to do with your
            weak/broke program again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • admin says:

Yeah, MU was really raking in the dough when UMKC kicked their asses.

Everybody needs the money and the Antlers need somebody to hate

  8. artemmis says:

awww…poor widdle Tigers… ran off with the guy in the fancy car.. now wants to crawl back and have a “relationship ” LOL! Who needs ya?

Mizzou did win the mediocre SEC Football “EAST” — avoiding playing the powers in the awesome SEC “West.” — big whoop (nice home game against Georgia, BTW)

Meanwhile, 1-8 Basketball Tigers now alone in dead last in the SEC.

    Lick it, Tigers. ;-p ((

    • hahhararley says:

THE MONEY IS FLOWING INTO MU……YOU JUST LOOKED AT

AND THERES A FUND OF 100 MILLION SITTING FOR MU ATHLETICS
      IN KC.
and arty miss we don’t want anything to do with that declining
institution ever in Lawrence. even Self is complaining about the
athletic department….and the lack of the rivalry according to
      Self “hasn’t been great”……give me a break…the guy is a great coach
but who at mizzou has even mentioned ku…no one…because we left
the little school of ku in the dust.
good luck in tourney. We will pull for you to win. Maybe it will help
pay some of the bills when the cuts come from Topeka……
and come on ku fans….who cares about bball outside Lawrence…joco…
topka……on the coasts its just another team ……
now misssouri is in the spotlight …….sec championship games…..
big time conference and a big time amount of money.
      go play in your sandbox.

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Suck it, piss boy. KU would give their left nut to just make a bowl game and not be the running joke of the real sport that matters in college sports now. Mizzou isn’t the focus of this blog entry, it was about your own BILL SELF admitting he misses the Mizzou rivalry.

      • admin says:

KU would give their left nut – or maybe the right one – because the money is in football.

And if you recall, that’s why Missouri was so desirable by other conferences a few years back and KU was not.

KU may be about to launch a comeback though

        • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Missouri was desirable because of the population of the state. It’s called 6 million television viewers. As usual, the Mike Slive and the SEC were forward thinking, and looking ahead at forming the $EC Network. They knew that the more television sets they could add, the more valuable their brand would be on the market. But the Big 12 and the rest of the were too busy calling Missouri names and denigrating their place in the conference, rather than working with them to keep them from leaving. Bottom line? Mizzou won big, and the Big 12 (10) lost big.

  9. hahhararley says:

self needs to stfu and play basketball. he got his dorms and jet,,,whats he want
now…one of the ku dance team members.
move on baldy….you’ve got a good bball team….that’s good enough for those
hoosiers and Birkenstock shoe hounds in Lawrence.
put simply…we want nothing to do with ku….get it….again…we left you
and we want nothing to do with you….your school….or your
fans…..so bye bye….good luck in tourney.

  10. Zack says:

Why would MU so desperately want to play KU? It’s because it no longer has a natural rival. MU is an orphan in the SEC.

    • Alphonse Tooty says:

Not at all accurate. The rivalry with Arkansas is developing nicely and will only get better. Mizzou is very happy in the SEC but thanks for your concern.

      • admin says:

Alphonse is kinda, sorta right too…

But it’s gonna take a loooooooooong time before MU-Ark gets anywhere near KU-MU. And truth be told, it probably never will

    • admin says:

      That’s more-or-less true, Zack…

But all KU has left is K-State and that ain’t much anymore.

In fact for me – and nationally – it’s next to nothing

    • admin says:

      You have a point, Zack…

Except I don’t think “desperate” is the word.

It’s merely a matter that MU doesn’t harbor any hard feelings (why would they?) and they just want to keep the historical rivalry alive.

It’s really as simple as that.

KU still has hurt feelings – they’re jealous of Mssouri’s successful move when they were left behind for dead – and they just aren’t over themselves yet.

But time heals all wounds and this was really a kne one, not a bullet to the head

  11. hahhararley says:

mu doesn’t need a rival. We’ve got the best football conference now in the
big money sport and a rival is useless. We are breaking records for revenue
and will survive while ku suffers. Truth is that we’d bash your heads
in football and take all the money because for ku they’d be playing the
best team of the year and ku would probably win the bball game.
Lets call it a draw…move on….and tell bill self crybaby bill that we don’t
    need nor want ku anymore.
move on little billy…..your day will come.

    • admin says:

Quit kidding yourself, every team benefits from having a rival…

The Chiefs used to have the Raiders – huge deal. Army has Navy. Rivalries are fun.

Quit pretending to be so haughty and act like you know a little something, H.

      • The Truth says:

That’s my point Hearne… rivalries are fantastic, but the KU v MU rivalry has devolved to a place where people spew actual anger, it makes it not as fun when people forget it’s a game.

Harley, I’ll engage you on this topic if you want to play the game. Why then are MU administrators quoted as saying they want to play KU again? http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/21/gary-pinkel-mizzou-still-pushing-to-re-start-border-war-with-kansas/

It’s not a money thing, because as you stated and I agree, they are making plenty. It’s not because they need to fill a competitive game, because MU would destroy KU in football.

It’s because you can’t replace long term history and all that goes with it. Just like in regular life, long term relationships have a different cadence then new ones. New ones can grow to that (see Arkansas rivalry) but they can never replace an old one.

So what are we left with, it’s really the battle for Kansas City. MU wants a foothold here, and while they have plenty of great fans, it’s a KU town. You can’t argue that. The only way to grow that foothold, is to have that relationship and then win games.

Look down the road at KSTATE.. when they emerged as a football power, they say there enrollment increase and they saw there power base increase in Kansas City. We have all lived here long enough to remember how quickly the Powercat became a strong simple in this town.

Be smart, use facts Harley.. Everyone misses the rivalry, to act like MU fans don’t is as egregious as a KU fan not admitting that they have taken a “no play” stance to punish MU.

For a guy who often makes smart comments, your anger on this topic has provided you with Rose Colored Glasses.

        • admin says:

          I’m with you, Truth…

Except I don’t look at the bitterness aspect quite like you do. It’s always been bitter for a few, like the Antlers.

For most it’s just fun. Good for some razzing at the office.

However some people seem to really live and die by these games. Like they did in ancient Rome

The KU/MU “rivalry” has nothing on Auburn/Bama. The only time it approached that level of relevance and excitement was in 2007.

my my. all of these comments after Hearne writes a post about an editorial in the J-W and Self makes a comment about playing MU.

just goes to show that the rivalry, the put-downs, the haughtiness, the Gayhawks, Slaver insults, the ‘our fans are better than your fans’ crap, etc., etc. are alive and well.

it (the rivalry) goes far beyond the sports teams, folks. the Border War lives.

so, if that is indeed the truth, what better way to personify it, embody it, than by having KU-MU settle their differences on the fields and courts.

as a KU alum, I was at first very, very unhappy with Mizzou leaving the Big 12 and turning their backs on a 100+ year rivalry, practically unmatched in the country. but, well, they did what they had to do and that was that and more eff’n power to them in that regard and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. the Big 12 looked doomed… flee!!!

renew the rivalry? well, we still seem to hate each other, so why not?

      Bravo, Mike T

I would suggest that MU going to the SEC was in no way a statement that they wanted the rivalry with ku to end.

They were just like Nebraska, Texas am and Colorado, rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Except they weren’t rats, it just was every man for himself

They weren’t jilting ku, they were leaving an uncertain fate for something that appeared (and is) far more glamorous

I don’t hate ku….I pull for them every basketball game…
I pull for mu for eveyr football game but like a divorce HOW long do we
still try to get the two together again….when its over…its over…
GET OVER IT HEARNE….YOU GOT A DIRVOCE…DO YOU WANT TO GET
TOGETHER WITH YOUR FIRST WIFE????????????????????????? I DOUBT
    IT..SO…..GET……OVER…….IT……..NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • admin says:

Nothing to get over, H Man…

They’ll play again when KU comes to its senses. You know it. I know it.

You can posture all you want.

        the facts are real simple.
MU can get all the revnue playing in Columbia and listening
to the many merchants/frats/local businesses who support
the program and who make big big money on football
        weekends.
When Missouri was in thebig 12 it wasa different story.
MOney was still undecided. So now mu has more cash
on hand than almost 80 per cent of the schools…a huge
quarter trillion in the bank for athletic improvements…
commitments that will make it the “Wharton ” on the
Midwest….a huge new broadcast contract….a major
draw with 70-80 k ticketes sold..plus the largest
amount of money for promtions/tie ins/sponsors/…..
special seating…..a very agreessive money machinie ….
a nationally ranked football team in the best big money
sec….and the escitement of game days that makes achiefs
game look like a kids birthday -party…..more money
than they can figyre out what to do with……and endowments
into the billions….SO LETS MAKE THIS CLEAR…WE DON’T
NEED KU AND THEIR THREE ON SALARY COACHES TO
COME TO MU. IF YOU WERE MU WOULD YOUR RATHER
HAVE KU OR GEORGIA PLAY AT HOME…………OR
        TENN…OR ARKANSAS.
AS FAR AS RIVALRIES THATS JUST FOR THE OLD
TIMERS LIKE HEARNE WHO WISH LIFE WAS LIKE
IT WS YEARS AGO. hEARNE….no one cares….I’m an
alumni and not once have I heard anything about playing
ku in bball or football….but we’ll destroy ku in every
other sports…..except maybe golf since the country club
kids at ku love that game.
SO HEARNE…STFU ALREADY. MU FAN S HAVE EXPRESSED THEIR VISION. PLEASE STOPSTEALING
STORIES FROM SMALL TOWN PAPERS LIKETHE
        JOURNAL…PLEASE STOP GETTING STORY IDEAS
FROM LISTENINGTO WHB….JUST 2 WEEKS AGO THEY
SAID 2 LINES ABOUT IT THEN MOVED ON…..
CASE CLOSED…..GO FIND ANOTHER JEWEL THIEF…
        THANKS…BUT NO THANKS….
WE’RE PLAYING BYU IN ARROWHEAD. MAYBE BUY
A TICKET AND SEE A REAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME
INSTEAD OF THOSE POP WARNER RETREADS CHARLIE
PUT OUT THERE…AND WHO THIS NEW GUY PUTS OUT
BEFOE THEY FIRE HIS a## TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
        good luck. you need it.
