Hearne: Is Winter 2015 History?

Screen Shot 2015-01-20 at 11.21.17 AMHeard on the street; that Winter 2015 is o-v-e-r…

Retailers are fire selling off winter coats, Paul Wilson’s primping his new above ground pool in Olathe, Harley’s waxing his surfboard and Jack Frost is nowhere to be found.

Time to mothball the snowblowers and tune up the lawnmowers?

No way, says KSHB TV weather wonk Gary Lezak.

“This winter there’s a warm pattern and a cold pattern and we just went through the warm pattern,” Lezak says. “We’ve had below average snowfall – but we’ve had 4 1/2 inches of snow so far – do you realize it’s snowed six times already this month?”

Get outta town.

“Seriously, one time it was .2 of an inch, another time it was .2 of an inch, then we had three inches one night. You know, 4 1/2 inches of snow by the end of January isn’t much. So far we’ve averaged 1/2 an inch of snow each time.”

So no May blizzards, like a couple years back?

“It can happen,” Lezak says. “But it’s not going to happen this year.”

And what of the talk that winter 2015 is done for?

“It’s coming back,” Lezak says. “Winter is not over. Other forecasters have come out and said, winter is over, but other forecasters have been wrong all along. It’s ridiculous, but they said it.

“It will turn brutally cold between February 5th to February 27th. We’ll probably get four to six inches of snow in February. It’ll be in the 20s for the highs and down near zero for the lows.”

Lezak proudly and defiantly flies his LRC weather freak flag at weather2020.com.

“The LRCis a new forecasting technology I’ve been working on for 30 years, but it’s still brand new,” he says. “But it’s the best weather forecasting method known in the field of meteorology today and you can test me on February 5th.”

As for having a seemingly snowless winter thus far, “Overall I’ve predicted we’ll have 17 inches of snow and a milder winter,” Lezak says. “But we’ve had huge amounts of snow in four of the last five years. We had 44 inches five years ago, then 36 inches, then 4 inches, then 32 inches and26 inches last year. So it’s been extremely snowy – but not this year – as predicted.”

love gary, even tho’ he can get a bit over the top sometimes. and i believe the LRC. I was following his KSHB blog way back in 2003 when he was constantly asked to prove the theory work. time after time he presented data to back it up and there was a lot of discourse on the merits of the evidence, etc.

back then, the blog was civil. after a few years tho’, it really turned ugly. I mean really ugly, personal attacks on gary, other commenters…basically got ridiculous and it all had to move to weather2020. whether or not that was at KSHB’s direction or not, I don’t know. I had to quit following it because it’s a ‘pay to play’ site now.

anyway, if gary says winter is coming back around Feb. 5, i’ll buy it. I hate it, but i’ll buy it!

The January Thaw is a part of Missouri history.

The thaw of 1865 led to an increase in guerilla warfare in Missouri.

All winter clothing goes on sale right after Christmas.

History may not repeat but it often rhymes.

Yeah, I can just see you and Paul duking it out in front of the neighbors, then retiring to the pool and sipping umbrella drinks while ogling Craig’s hotties

How can winter be over? It is still January 21. Think people!

  7. CG says:

I don’t think its totally over either, however we generally get most of the bad weekends in December, January..time frame. February is still risky, but look like it will not be that bad…business has been helped out a ton by the decent weather. Folks go out if its cold, even in the teens at night but snow..no way…we fear snow even the ‘word’ snow cuts the go out crowd at night in half, some snow lke 2/3’s its bad…I know we deal with it at Stanfords…but the nice weather has made the last couple months solid and busy..TV weather hates it, kills ratings..when it even looks like snow its an all day blitz..this year there has been NO REAL SNOW..none..a flick here and there late, late..but weather men hurt all of us bad when they run it into the ground…they always do…they love it..ratings.
