Glazer: Kansas City’s Forgotten World Series

Texas Rangers v Kansas City RoyalsYes, it was unexpected…

Kansas City Royals fans hoped the team could maybe get a wild card game. And then, perhaps even one playoff series before it all ended. Instead Kansas City was treated to a month of playoffs and a World Series that went to Game 7 right here at The K – one run short of a world championship. But hey, we’re champions of the American League now and that’s something we haven’t done in 30 years.

BUT WHERE’S THE NOISE NOW?

It was decided there’d be a parade the Friday after the series ended win or lose, but that was cancelled.

I know a parade was in the mix because I got called to help get it done.

Then I heard the players were just tired and wanted to go home. The long playoffs run just wore them out.

3942119478_b3eb4d4125And during the four series that lasted a month, the city put up very few banners.

I was on the Plaza several times during the run and there was NOTHING UP.

Yeah, we had blue water, big deal. No banners, really. And there are none up now. In LA, where I once lived, the entire city had banners, red, white and blue. Light posts had LA Dodgers photos up and for the Lakers when they were in the playoffs.

Here not much.

Why? We had an entire month to get it done.

I’ll tell you why, poor leadership, no money and who knows what else.  Guess we’re saving up so we can blow tens of millions on the American Royal horse show nobody attends.

Royals fans went crazy but the city really did very little on its own. And there’s next to nothing up anywhere now, maybe a blue banner here and there downtown. What about Johnson County? Hell, they own most of the season tickets. Nothing there either.

The_Land_That_Time_ForgotRemember all those Royals caps and t-shirts that they couldn’t keep in stock?

Try the stores now, they’re on sale 3 for 1. Seems the series even wore out the fans. We just aren’t used to winning, and not for a month’s worth of games. Again, it’s not the fans fault.

Be honest though and look around, it’s as if it all never happened.

It all ended just a few weeks ago yet it seems like years have passed,  doesn’t it?

Kansas City should have put up banners, flags and posters.

We want visitors to see that we were winners right? Where are the signs of our winning? A few plaques and at a closed stadium with a bunch of filthy concession stands? Where?

Beats me.

tumblr_l1vkvxS0zo1qa9armo1_5001What World Series?

Now if the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl, different story. Don’t kid yourselves this is an NFL city today.

Sure we kinda sorta loved the Royals, just not as much as we pretended too.

    Troll, troll, troll your boat……..

  2. harley says:

    GLAZE…please stick to hottties.
The city had little time to put it together. Banners/signage…yes there
was but since you never were downtown you never saw anything.
There were billboards and every media covered it big time.
Remember…there was little time to prepare….we won the league series
then had what 5 days to get world series together. There’s lots of things
that were done between those series that you knew nothing about.
You’re in your own world…and the parade was replaced with an event
at kaufman which was well attended. The players loved it even though
    they lost the seveth game.
this is typical…if you can’t say something bad about the team…you have
    to run down the city.
KC did a magnificent job during the series….when games were here
    it was a blast.
get out of the strip clubs and go see what people are doing.
HOWEVER…NEVER REPORTED BUT SEEN BY HARLEY….
OVER 1000 PEOPLE AT POWER AND LIGHT WERE MACED
AT THE ENTRANCE BETWEEN MAKERS MARK AND THE BEER
PLACE (CAN’T REMEMBER THE NAME)…..police went overboard trying
to move crowd back from barriers. A real mess. Where does power and
light get their off duty people for security. Totally unneeded.

  3. Kerouac says:

“One run short of a world championship”

    – actually 90 feet short – but only short of tying, which is hardly the same as winning… the desperation KCindy fandom be palpable. So close and yet do far; might as well have been miles, “billion and billions” nod Carl Sagan.

“But hey, we are champions of the American League now and that’s something we haven’t done in 30 years.”

    – the forerunner of the Chiefs won the American League Championship; so revered an accomplishment that they moved to another city five months later, but hey…

“Now if the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl”

    – by George, I thought you’d died Carlin (like the Chiefs/Royals, every year since 1970 / 1985… yeah, it’s a trend – the rigor of a rite…

Well, Kerouac too once believed, once upon a long, Long, LONG time ago… at some point, reality interjects and one has to acknowledge the fact twill never be so again:

Kansas City, home to BBQ, fatso’s & “losers by the number, troubles by the score, every year believe once more – the next less than before.”

    🙁

  4. Kerouac says:

Billy Butler no longer a Royal, now an A… 3 years $30 million; so much for loyalty.

    🙂

    • bob says:

Why would he come back? The Royals cut his fat ass.

      • Kerouac says:

You’ve got that bass ackwards – Butler cut KC – be a big country breakfast’s worth of difference – measured in multi-million$.

The loyalty referenced applies to both the Royals as well Butler, latter comes out of it literally worth a million – check that – $30 million bucks.

        🙂

        🙂

        • Moi says:

He didn’t really seem to fit into the Royals plan.

He is more valuable to another team that needs someone like him. The Royals didn’t. If they could get him for a basement bargain price they would be fools no to take him. He called KC before signing with O to see if they would match. They didn’t.

        • Worldwide says:

The Royals had the option on his contract……soooo, they essentially cut him.

    • CG says:

Wow 30 million for Butler. Crazy. More than Brett made in his entire career. Go figure.

  5. CG says:

K you just love to rub it in brother. Yeah the series wore out KC…we just aren’t used to being a winner or how to handle it.

    • Kerouac says:

Call me a contrarian, call me the counter gelastic hyperbole and overhype, call me a cynic, skeptic and killjoy… just do not call me heartless.

Have turned an new leaf* – will stop now slandering the world of sport Kansas City, piling on the heap KCindy was left in the GIANTS, as the same one other also-ran Swiss Chiefs will be left in same, soon.

      Why?

      Because I care.

      It’s how Kerouac rolls.

      🙂

      * fingers crossed, if behind back

      • harley says:

would love to kick k’s ass…
        he’s a kill joy.
we’ve contacted anonymous to get his id…
don’t cut the chiefs or royals….we are very sensitive to
        outsiders bad mouthing our teams.
we will find you …..don’t doubt harley

        • Kerouac says:

Nod Vinny – ‘My Cousin Kerouac’ – starring Kerouac as Himself & Hardly as homo erectus (well, he can dream.)

As the scene opens, Kerouac has just gotten on Hardly’s last nerve – again – latter unable keep up with the ‘Lays Potato Chip’ of blogdom, the former’s narrative batting about of KCindy’s woeful sports teams.

Desperate, friendless and both alternately incontinent & constipated, unable make Kerouac comply, Hardly again reaches out, his fecal-covered persona:

Hardly: How ’bout if I just kick your ass?

Kerouac: Oh, a counter-offer. That’s what we lawyers – I’m a lawyer – we lawyers call that a counter-offer. This is a tough decision here. Let you kick my ass – at a very reasonable cost to you of $10,000,000.00, or, continue to paint mustaches on KCindy #1 and KCindy # 2.

Lemme think… I could use a good ass-kickin to be very honest with you but I don’t need the money. Nah, think I’ll just go with continuing to paint mustaches.

          Hardly: Over my dead body.

Kerouac: You like to renegotiate as you go along, don’t you? Well, here’s my counter-offer – do I have to kill you?

What if I were just to kick the ever lovin shit out of ‘you’ and you donate $10,000,000.00 to my favorite charity: KCindy Fandom’s ‘this is our year – part 45!’

          Hardly: In your dreams.

Kerouac: Oh no no… in reality. I kick the shit out of you, and you quit tuggin on my cape (and your appendage) & drag your costive haunches back to your day job (below, double entendre)

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRvrj-x1lSo&list=RDqRvrj-x1lSo#t=22

Hardly: You kick the shit out of me.

          Kerouac: Yeah.

Hardly: Autograph it to prove I got it kicked by you?

Kerouac: Provide a HazMat suit for me?

Hardly: OK, then I’ll leave for good & go back to the cloaca I call home.

          Kerouac: [takes off his jacket]

          Hardly: We’re gonna fight now?

Kerouac: Well yeah. But first, show me the money.

          Hardly: I have it.

Kerouac: You have it? Then show it to me.

Hardly: [pause] I can get it.

Kerouac: You can get it? Okay, get it.

          ~ To Be Continued ~

Outside not winning the whole thing. I don’t see a negative that came out of this. Just trying to stir emotions and get views..

  7. bob says:

“I was on the Plaza several times durning the run and there was NOTHING UP.”

You must have horrible eyesight. They were up in numbers

  8. bob says:

“It was decided there’d be a parade the Friday after the series ended win or lose. But that was cancelled.”

A parade was going to happen if we lost? That is the sign of a loser city. I’m glad it didn’t happen. KC would have been the laughing stock of the country if we had a parade for losing.

    • CG says:

Nope. We won the American League Championship. So you are kinda a well…we didn’t do it cause the players didn’t want to.

      • harley says:

again glaze you are full of shit. Making stuff up.
mayour said thered be a parade if we won….no parade
        if we lost!!!
what kind of fool are you making of yourself.
Your running about 37% in your bets…and if you wouldn’t
have pulled the wool over everyones eyes for 3 years you’d
be no higher than 40% on your picks.
I’ll put up a blind dog against your picks. YOu have worn
out your b.s…..you’ve been outed so to speak.
stick to stories on bill cosby. At least he was black.

      • bob says:

Because they would have been embarrassed. No city puts on parades for runner ups.

  9. Jack Springer says:

Please stop writing about things you know nothing about.

    You are a big troll.

  10. CG says:

Well what I said is all true. There is little up anywhere for visitors or much of anyone to see to remember the run. Maybe they will do it one day, who knows. I was on the Plaza and all over. There was nothing going on, except some folks watching the games in a bar or two. No banners to speak of..no media running all over interviewing fans. Very little. I’m sorry thats the way it was and is…don’t be mad at me. Our city not the fans, did not much…oh yeah the blue stuff in the water. I lived in cities like LA who did tons more.

We say we want national attention. I saw little done to bring that here from our city. The fans were great, but not much done by the city. Where is it?

    • harley says:

did you watch a newscast byany of the tv stations?
or were you at that strip club stuffing dollars down some Puerto rican
poontang? Or were you wearing beer goggles.
The local and national tv covered everything in kc…from the
fans to the parties…the fans in power and light were on tv
more than anyone I’ve seen on any world series game.
in game 3….at least 4 times they did live shots from p and l.
We were down there for 5 games…..and everyone from espn to
cnn to nbc national were down there.
You must have been situation at the “Y” someowhere in
fairway because you’d have to be deaf and blind not to see
      what was happening.
You need to get out more often glaze…you’re getting old.
As far as banners….they were all over kc (plaza/downtown)…
did you see billboard coming out of kci?
WTF do you want? Westport/p and l/almost all bars in joco
were packed on game nights. But you were at your place with some
bad comics griping that business was bad. Hey…that’s life.
I thnk you’ve just gotten to the point of being old where nothing
makes you smile or happy. Get with shoedog/chuck/k/and hearne
and wipe that frown out of your attitude.
All you guys have such negative attitudes toward everything…
I guess getting old makes you act like that.

  11. Arte says:

There were plenty of banners dowtown and on the plaza. Even new ones when the World Series started. And the Royals weren’t one run away fron winning game seven. They were two runs away.

  12. Pete Repeat says:

    Glaser,
Worry about what you do to the city’s reputation. It ain’t that great DICK!

    • CG says:

Wow..I think it is Repeat. Where ever I go folks are happy to see me and have only nice things to say. In my life maybe one person has come up to me with a bad word. Like you.

  13. Truman72 says:

Just to make sure everyone knows…..Glazer has lived in LA. Yep, he has lived in LA. He mentions it so often we can never forget.

You were called to help organize the parade? Exactly what were you going to do to organize the parade? In addition to being a stellar business man, comedy honcho and lady killer, did you also organize all those banner prep and parades in LA?

You blogs are like a car wreck, I try not to click on them but I just want to see the carnage that you call a story.

    • CG says:

Well Truman I chaired RED FRIDAY. When I was handed the event in 93 it drew only 300 people. In two years I had it up to over 15,000 in Westport. Attended on stage by film stars, playmates, players, Lamar Hunt on and on…2 hour show…so I kinda to do how to do this. Glad you asked…I mention were I live to give credit to what I am talking about…dig. Lady killer, uh, yeah. Not new news.

The point of this story was to show how little the ‘leaders’ did, the city, not the fans or people like you who cared. That’s all. No other than TV media it will do little I think to promote KC to visitors or people who might move to another city like ours. That’s all.

  14. CG says:

PS THE CITY DIC CHANGE THE STREET NAME OF BALTIMORE AVE TO ROYALS AVE DURING THE PLAYOFFS AND SERIES..BUT THEY CHANGED BACK I’M TOLD TO BALTIMORE AVE…HOWEVER THEY WILL SELL YOU A DUPLICATE STREET SIGN THAT SAYS ‘ROYALS’…
