Hearne: October 2014 KC Radio Station Rankings

jasperscheers

JJ Mirabile

They’re up, they’re down…

Who’s on first? Who’s on third? Who should have tried to make it home before Salvadore Perez bought the farm?

Will The Buzz ever knock off The Rock, and why did its ratings barely rise when management was expecting a pretty good bump after all the publicity it got for its foolhardy, million dollar lawsuit loss?

Will adult contemporary station KCKC (formerly known as Alice) ever attain a meaningful ratings liftoff?

And wouldn’t it be cheaper for former talk radio titan KCMO AM to just admit it could care less about trying to successfully program a radio station, and convert the signal to an All Jasper’s All of the Time foodie format and let the Mirabile Family use the frequency to start kicking KMBZ‘s butt like in the good old daze?

And will The Bridge toss in the towel and merge with KKFI FM and hire The Pitch‘s Charles Ferruzza to host the morning drive simulcast?

Those questions and more remain unanswered in the wake of the October 2014 radio station ratings for listeners 6 and older, Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight.

I thought Lazlo was a recovering alcoholic?

  2. admin says:

    Dunno, Loblaw…

What does that look like to you in his hand? Maybe it’s his high school yearbook photo.

He sure is cute, ain’t he?

Hey, anybody who goes to church at least five days a week is OK by me.

  3. CG says:

I have always thought the numbers are misleading. We do most of those stations or have over recent years. The response to comedy and tickets is very high on 98.9, Q with Mike Kennedy, KMBZ when we do a live interview and Mix has always been consistently solid. Some of the top rated shows don’t show that response. So I just wonder if these listener numbers are correct. I know everyone doesn’t love comedy but having a big star on is a good measuring stick. We all like stars.

I used to do KPRS 103 and with an urban act they too were off the chain.

I’m curious if Craig thinks that Lazlo has what it takes to become the next Johnny Dare?

Dare is only 40-something and my hunch is Lazlo isn’t that far removed from nearing the big 4-Oh.

And generationally, modern rock or alternative appeals to younger listeners than traditional and head banging rock.

In addition to that there are rumors that Dare may be considering hanging it up after his current contract is up.

All of that said, alternative has never attained the more widespread popularity of conventional and hard rock. I know, because alt rock is my music of choice and I follow a number of these bands, including up and coming acts like operators.

    • CG says:

I don’t think there will be another JOHNNY DARE Hearne. He is as big as it gets in radio in one market. So no Lazlo won’t be the next Dare. However he seems popular and might be ‘the’ guy in am radio talk format to the younger audiences if Johnny leaves in the next few years. Yes he is around 40 I believe.

What Dare did likely won’t happen again. Radio is not popular enough. Like there will never be another Tom Cruise…his replacement that makes 30 million or more a year Jeremy Renner is not a household name yet. With all his franchise movies. Dare is a KC household name and second to nobody. I would say he has over a 90% recognition rate to his name. Nobody else has 70%. He is in a league of his own. There will be no replacement. Lazlo can do well but he will not be what Dare is or was. Johnny got the entire city behind him, unreal. Way it is.

      • harley says:

90% name recognition. Glaze that’s ajoke.
Lets go to Q ratings and see if anyone has that high
        a name recognition q rating.
Last time I saw one the highest rated celebrity in kc
        was yes….johnny….not johnny dare…johnny rowlands.

“You’d drink in church too if you just blew a million bucks smarting off to a future law school grad!”

    That was his wife.

    • Hearne says:

      No, it was Lazlo

He also acts as the station’s program director under what I assume is his real name Scott Geiger.

And it was he, that when the woman who was slandered called to explain that she was not a porn star and ask that the segment and her name be taken down, he smarted off to her with questions like, Are you sure you’re not a porn star? How do you know you’re not a porn star?

You might say that he lead with his chin, looking back on the jury verdict
