I’ll let you in on a little secret…
San Franciscans hate people referring to their town as Frisco.
“Nicknames are supposed to embody some overall characteristic, not just act as a lazy surgery of the city’s name,” according to an online SF-based magazine. “There’s a reason we don’t call New York “Nork” when
we’re feeling saucy.”
They also hate losing.
And for the fun of it, let’s take a gander at how the San Francisco Chronicle treated last night’s loss to the Kansas City Royals.
Starting with a weak-wristed bust of Dick’s Sporting Goods…
“Dick’s Sporting Goods Crowns Royals as World Champs in Ad,” reads the headline posted just around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
“With the way Game 6 is unfolding, Kansas City fans are celebrating,” it begins. “But a sporting goods chain was ready to go one step further and give the World Series trophy to the Royals early.
“According to Busted Coverage, this Dick’s Sporting Goods commercial touting Royals championship gear ran on Monday in Kansas City. So the Royals were down 3-2 in the World Series when it ran. Oops! But then again, that’s what the Giants were saying after giving up 9 runs in the first six innings of Game 6.”
Had The Chronicle bothered to read the report it credited the scoop to, it would have learned that it was an embargoed ad – meaning it was to be run only if and when the Royals won the World Series.
Undoubtedly Dick’s supplied another ad to run instead were the Royals to lose Game 6 or 7.
On top of that, neither the Chronicle nor Busted bothered to bust the actual entity that messed up, Kansas City’s Fox 4 News
In other words, Dick’s didn’t screw up, Fox 4 did the honors.

Close But No Riot Police
Seems those crazy, towel waving Giants fans were pretty bummed when the Royals bludgeoned their team 10-zip…
“Orange- and black-clad fans mourned on barstools, slouched on couches and sulked en masse at San Francisco’s Civic Center Tuesday as their beloved Giants staggered through a Royal stomping in the sixth game of the World Series,” the Chronicle reports.
Royal stomping – I like it.
That’s the bad news.
The good?
The setback spared the town from being trashed by Giants fans.
“The scene at Civic Center was subdued even among the police, who had shown up in big numbers in preparation for a possible victory riot
San Francisco’s 2012 World Series victory riot,” the Chronicle added. “Celebratory mayhem is still a possibility, warned a 6-year-old boy named Joey. He pinned a note for his Mission District neighbors on a wall outside the Popeye’s eatery at Mission and 22nd Streets.”
Giants fans tore up the town in 2012 after their team prevailed in the World Series at Detroit.

History, Cards Stacked Against Giants
“Royal Pain: Giants Rocked in KC” reads the main headline, below a photo of an ultra disturbed looking Hunter Pence.
“In 1975, two events in Georgia and Massachussets (sic) occurred that now have immense meaning for the Giants and their faithful as they gird for an intense finish to the 2014 season Wednesday night,” the game story begins.
“Tim Hudson was born that year and the Cincinnati Reds overcame Carlton Fisk’s now-famous ‘please stay fair’ home run in Game 6 of the World Series to win Game 7 at Fenway Park.
“No team since has gone on the road, lost the sixth game of the World Series (and) won the championship.
“That is the stark history the Giants face after the Royals crushed Jake Peavy and Yusmeiro Petit for seven runs in the second inning of Game 6 Tuesday night and giggled through a 10-0 victory.
“Once again, the Giants will butt heads with unfriendly history. No road team has won Game 7 in the World Series since the 1979 Pirates. Nine since have lost, including the 2002 Giants.”
Not sure the Giants will give a damn about history tonight. Everything I’ve seen from that team says guts, heart and talent. Yeah, they took it right on the chin last night. It’s the best thing that could have possibly happened for the Royals to serve notice to SF that they aren’t going quietly into the night. But, I expect a dogfight tonight with both teams throwing everything they have at each other. What a classic series and a roller coaster ride of emotions. If KC is fortunate enough to come out on top tonight, it will be the most fun I’ve ever had being a Royals fan. If they come up short, it will be the most fun I’ve ever had being a Royals fan. Win/win, for me. This team is just so damn fun to watch.
Let’s Go Rooooooooyals!
Well said, Jim
ITS OVER…ITS OVER…ITS OVER
say it todayand tonight glaze and hearne…
then its really over!
Hearne is preparing 2 columns for tomorrow. If the Royals lose, it will be “CG and I TRIED to warn you!” If they win, it will be “Does it REALLY matter? Nobody watched it on TV anyway!”
Think I’m starting to know why you call yourself mysterious…
You’ve got me mixed up with Dick’s
No mix up in you being a dick.
LMAO….!
Giants fan: But we have a Bumgardner…
Win, lose, or suck, this town has had a blast.
Die-hard Royals fans are the ones you see walking around like zombies from all the late nights in October.
Get your hi-blood pressure meds ready…..or as I call it, Tank 7.
ITS OVER
🙂
It may not be lazy surgery, but folks from St. Louis hate their city being referred to as “St. Louie.”
