World Series Game Seven here we come…
This is the game we all pretended we pitched in or batted in as kids. The game dreams are made of. And now, here we are again for only the second time in our city’s history. KC’s 1980 World Series ended in game six. But now we stand on the threshold of greatness one more time.
Just to be here is an honor.
This game is for US – more so than for these players who will make millions and leave our fair city in a few years only to return for old timers games.
And we earned it, because only after decades of waiting, dreaming, hoping and wishing did it finally came true.
Via a most unlikely team and strange timing.
This year’s Kansas City Royals are a team nobody thought would go this far. The hope was for a wild card or maybe just maybe a division title if Detroit got weak.
The Royals are a team few thought could win 90 games. A team with no stars, good pitching and good defense but no hitting or power. Not exactly the recipe for a WORLD CHAMP, but here they are nonetheless…one game away from glory.
Last night’s game was almost a repeat of game 7 of the 1985 World Series against the Cards. In a blink, 10 runs came, almost out of nowhere. Will that happen again tonight?
More important this series is for the people of Kansas City.
The ones who can’t afford box seats or make reservations in the dining room club of the Royals Club. It’s for all the people who watched on tv all these years and maybe got free ticket at work a couple times a year. It’s for the kids who work at the stadium and think they know George Brett or Eric Hosmer.
It’s for the moms and dads who told their kids about the 1985 championship with Brett, Amos Otis, Hal McRae, Willie Wilson and Quiz. It’s for everyone who works 9 to 5 and wants to say, “Yeah, I’m from Kansas City and we mean something, we have the WORLD CHAMPION ROYALS”
Yep, finally a pro team to go along with KU basketball.
Hell the Royals already are AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPS.
To me they get a parade Friday no matter what. They earned it, we earned it. It’s yours Kansas City. Even a guy like me who’s been down on this team and the Chiefs – yes, I’m proud too. I bleed KC blue and red just like you do. I just got fed up over the years, that’s all.
I’m very proud of this city and it’s nice to see us on national television every day for something good and clean and ALL AMERICAN.
GAME SEVEN, ENJOY IT KANSAS CITY!
PS: IT’S OVER, IT’S OVER, IT’S OVER…FOR THE GIANTS
headline on kcc Thursday morning:
HARLEY WORKS HIS MAGIC AGAIN!!!! ROYALS WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!
nice article. Was at 7th game 1985. Was banging an Hispanic looking girl. After the game went to Westport and literally so many people jammed in there I thought
Kellys walls were going to cave in.
too oldfor that now…headed to power and light private seating (see..you get
older you can’t fight the crowds like in ’85)
thanks for being a good sport. REMEMBER: EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY!!!!!!!!!and…
NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Usually go to 30-40 royals games a season. Know all the ushers/venders.
good people. if WE WIN i’ll remember JACK THE DRIPPER who served beer
in section 114 for so many years at the k. Guy had a problem and when
pouring the beer you’d lose half the beer when he spilled it. Still great fan
and good guy. wish he was here to see this.
Hold – check that – STOP the presses! Headline banner rewrite! The ‘2014 WORLD CHAMPION’ SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS just ruined the script ans storybook ending… Kerouac tried to tell all ya alls.
🙂
if you’ve heard some of the sound bites from the players, they want this for the fans as much as they do for themselves. I think that gives them a bit more motivation and may give them the edge. I’d like that edge to be another 7 run lead but I think tonight’s game will be close, maybe extra innings.
meanwhile, nice flask. where do you get those???
Believe it or not, The Home Shopping Network for $19.99 and five bucks shipping.
Not a bad holiday gifting idea under the circumstances, huh?
it’ll make a nice companion to my Royals shot glass.
Amos Otis didn’t play for the 1985 Royals.
Sshhh… he thinks he’s on a roll…
Quis…….
Interesting sell check, Lib
was wondering about that myself.
Otis played for the Royals from 1970 to 1983, then wrapped up his playing career in 1984 with the Pirates who finished 6th in the NL East with a 75 and 87 record
sorry we talked about his, Wilson replaced Otis in the 85 series, Otis was there for the 80 series.
Giant KU fan here. Please stop comparing the Jayhawks to ANY professional team. A National Championship in college athletics isn’t even in the same UNIVERSE as a World Series or Superbowl Championship!! Just stop!
Jim hate to tell you its bigger, the NCAA FOOTBALL GAME, than the world series, sorry baseball is just above hockey on the hot list…nobody watches baseball anymore…each year it gets weaker and weaker..there are no stars…no commercials…nobody in the news much..not like NFL, NCAA OR EVEN NBA…SORRY.
Thats NCAA COLLEGE FOOTBALL TITLE GAME…
yet baseball attendance is at an all time high, even with all these new stadiums being built with fewer seats.
Nobody goes there any more, its too crowded.
Man, it’s as quiet in here as a Royals rally vs Mad Bum… better ( ‘wait till next year part 30’) luck in 2015, KC – congratulations to the 2014 ‘WORLD CHAMPION’ SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.
🙂
K come on man, give these guys their dues. A nice run with a fun team. Made many KC fans very happy. I mean GAME 7, pretty cool, one run loss. Great game. It was cool just to be in it that far.
Never ‘settle for’ making an appearance, something the Chiefs have been doing for nigh on half a century, sporadically even the preliminaries, cigar certainly out the question.
‘ What have our losers won, Don Pardo? ‘
“Wellllllll Mel, some nice parting gifts & a copy of our home game video – ‘San Francisco GIANTS hoist the ‘World Championship Trophy!’.”
‘ Alright thank you Don Pardo, and thank you for playing Royals, now let’s have a nice round of applause for them audience.’
KC doesn’t take the next, final step baseball as football their neighbors across the parking lot, the whetted appetite today becomes the dry mouth tomorrow'(s), ad nauseam.
Royals have to KICK THAT DOOR DOWN! There are winners & there are also-rans… Chiefs are the latter, Royals have a chance not to be. They’ve the experience now that they lacked pre-World Series, the rest is up to them; they’re officially on the clock.
WHO GIVES A FUK? I received over 200 nasty emails from san fransisco fans
about an article written by a bay area writer about 13 reasons to hate Kansas
city.
We’re on a roll…we let America in on the best kept secret…Kansas city.
and chuckles with his hate filled comments and shoe dog with his
boring writing won’t change anyone’s on here’s agreement…
KANSAS CITY IS THE BEST TOWN IN AMERICA!!!!!!!
don’t forget it.
