Bahamas at the Record Bar in KC
I’ve had this one circled on my calendar for awhile now. Don’t let the name fool you – the band is really the alter ego of lead singer/ songwriter Afie Jurvanen, a Canadian crooner in the mold of a less boring Jack Johnson. Even that’s not a great comparison though, because Afie is way more talented of a guitar player. But the feel is kind of similar, and the two have toured together. Check out on of the best songs of the last couple years, Lost in the Light.
Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band at Starlight Theater in KC
If you’re into the whole nostalgia thing, and want to see a 70+ year old dude play some drums on a bunch of other peoples’ tunes, then, well, this one’s for you. The band this time around is composed of Steve Lukather of Toto, Gregg Rolie of Journey, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, Todd Rundgren, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette. Their recent setlists have looked like this:

J Roddy Walston and the Business at the Bottleneck in Lawrence
Trust me, this one will be a throwdown. J Roddy and his boys have been tearing things up this summer, with fantastic performances at Wakarusa, among others. They’re getting ready for a couple nights at the Austin City Limits Festival before heading west to bigger venues, so this show will likely be one of the more intimate places to catch this rising outfit. They did a brief, 30 minute set at the Buzz Beach Ball a few weeks ago, but they need a little more time than that. And the Bottleneck is the perfect place to get a little bit of their soulful, fuzzy, rock.
CAPTION THAT PIC
Ringo Starr doing a (very bad) double-handed Mr. Spock ‘live long and prosper’ imitation…
Your sniffing that Ringo is nothing but “a 70+ year old dude play(ing) some drums” smacks of desperation to jump-start some generational showdown but it won’t work. Listen to those Beatles songs in their original form, then confess your inadequacy to critique with such dismissive characterizations.
