Jack Goes Confidential: ‘The Heat’—Female Protagonists Make for Box Office Gold

the-heat-bullock-mccarthy_510x317It sure seemed like 20th Century-Fox had the perfect comedy pairing three weeks ago when the studio served up Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson‘s THE INTERNSHIP.

Alas, it was not to be.

So here we go again as Fox gives it another shot with THE HEAT.

It’s a simple enough concept, that’s for sure: a crusty Boston cop versus a tightass F.B.I. agent—except now they’re teamed. Starring America’s TWO sweethearts, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.
So what we’ve got here are two damn good cops in their own right forced to work together, making for female protagonists in the first degree.

Here BRIDESMAIDS director Paul Feig hits another out-of-the-park homerun by casting Ms. McCarthy as a streetwise, down and dirty cop who doesn’t take s*** from anyone.

The-Heat-Trailer-535x227Especially not from prissy, uptight FBI agent Sandra Bullock who’s dispatched to Boston to assist in a high profile operation to bring down a ruthless drug lord—stepping squarely on foul-mouthed McCarthy’s turf.

It’s a match made in box office heaven.

But be forwarned!

Whereas McCarthy’s comic delivery and perfect timing maybe spot on and the laughs come fast and furiously, the ferociously foul soundtrack is bound to offend some moviegoers.

And we’re not just talking limitless f-bombs here, folks.

Oh no, those seem soft when compared to the rest of the film’s strong verbal arsenal.

The M.P.A.A. Ratings Board puts its this way: “THE HEAT—Rated R for pervasive language, strong crude content and some violence.”sandra-bullock-melissa-mccarthy-the-heat

Translation: This one really EARNS its hard-R rating thanks to the spoken word.

Add Marlon Wayans plus a number of fun-cameos to the proceedings and you’ve got what will probably turn out to be the top adult popcorn-comedy of the summer season.

THE HEAT raising 3-1/2 out of 5 red-hot comedy fingers.

Hi Bro; it’s sure not planned that way. Most weeks I review just one new film on this site. And for some reason they seem to be falling into the 3-1/2 range. Had I reviewed “WHITE HOUSE DOWN” on KCC you would’ve seen a 2-1/2. And don’t forget that “THE INTERNSHIP” barely socred 2-1/2 three weeks ago.
Saw “THE LONE RANGER” last night and will run that review next Wednesday. It’ll get (?) fingers. Or maybe not. Still thinking about it.

    I’m with BS…

I kinda understand the movie ratings system most critics use, but it really doesn’t make sense to me either. Three out of five stars (or fingers or popcorn bags) usually indicates a favorable review.

But three out of five is only 60 percent. That’s a D where I went to school.

Ahhh, but do ticket stubs outnumber fingers????
And don’t give critics too much credit. I think it’s basically a gut thing.
Speaking of gut…I better fill mine.
