Finally a smart new bittersweet romantic comedy that doesn’t resort to raunch to get laughs and make its point!
In CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE Steve Carell seemingly has it all. Good job. Nice house. Great kids and married to his childhood sweetheart Julianne Moore.
And then it happens right over dinner!
They’re both studying the menu, when Carell asks her what she wants and she replies: "a divorce."
Seems she’s been cheating on him with Kevin Bacon.
So there he is – 40-something Steve Carell – finding himself and his outdated clothing in a strange world of single bars and unapproachable hotties. Enter ladies man extraordinaire Ryan Gosling who takes pity on Carell and helps fashion him into a player.
His first conquest, Marisa Tomei.
Meanwhile Gosling (who always scores) meets his match in Emma Stone while Julianne Moore has second thoughts about her midlife crisis walk on the wild side.
Here’s where it all gets hairy…
Carell with Tomei: How does she really fit into the equation?
And how about Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone? Never saw that one coming.
Suffice it to say that I can’t add any additional hints without turning this piece into a ‘Spoiler-Supreme!’
Let’s just say that this movie’s final act comes up with a couple of major twists that I never saw coming.
The three-generational romantic comedy CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE raising 3-1/2 out of 5 bittersweet fingers
