This just in…
Legendary KC crooner Marilyn Maye was rushed to a hospital earlier today and her weeklong series of sold-out shows at Jardine’s for Fathers Day week – slated to start tomorrow – will have to be rescheduled.
"I’ve got bad news," says Jardine’s owner Beena Brandsgard. "Marilyn’s in the hospital. The shows are all canceled. She has three kidney stones."
While kidney stones can extremely painful, they’re generally not life threatening – the biggest risk factor being dehydration.
That said, the fabled KC cabaret singer just celebrated her 83rd birthday in April.
"Her manager Helen just called five minutes ago and said that Marilyn woke up and she had kind of a problem," Brandsgard says. "She had three kidney stones and went to the hospital. I mean, tomorrow is the (first) show. We’ve got the food organized and everything. We were pretty much sold out all week and on Father’s Day. Now I’ve got to book musicians and everything."
Brandsgard expects to announce replacement dates for Maye’s shows as soon as possible.
Marilyn
Beena,
How about a little concern for the 83 year old Ms. Maye? your more concerned about finding singers and the hardship you find yourself in temporarily. This will be remembered as you being self-centered rather than caring. As Craig would say, “Think About It !”
Snappietom
I don’t know who she is
But I sure hope she gets to feeling better. Prayers for a speedy recovery
my dad loved that lady
my dad loved to go hear her sing. she sang downtown a lot. hope she gets better.
And jardines…everything will be fine…just return the food and bring in brody the harmonica kid
to play.
He hearne…whats with the math problems…don’t you know most of these idiots who comment
here can’t add unless they have a calculator……
She was concerned snapple, but by the time she called me the coast was clear and it was only kidney stones. Meanwhile she had like five days of sold out shows to call people on, five nights of nobody booked to play the club and probably enough food to feed a small army with nobody coming to eat it!
Its A Tough Blow to Jardines
The public doesn’t realize the hole this puts the club in. It’s deep. last minute, no replacement, tons of food and booze ordered and paid for, you lose your ass. It can kill your entire summer. I am sorry for her illness, she is a nice person and talented to say the least, but poor Beena. This has to be painful. I hope it all works out for you guys and for Marilyn. We had this happen when we opened Stanfords and Ralphie May cancelled last minute, tough one.
Its an opportunity!
Come on. Its been 6 months since the KC Conf xmas party. We could have Mermaid get out her old Jules outfit (oh, wait. that didnt work there), have Craig round up his bevy of babes, Harley could post a notice on 1 of his swinger websites, we could invite the new KCStar publisher, that friendly Kelly’sGuy could MC, Beena could extend a special discount and we’ll have a KC Confidential Night at Jardines! How about Wed or Thurs?
okkay…ookay….be prepared
when you book older talent you need to be prepared for this. Bring in one of your standins or
go to john knox village during karaoke night and bring in one of the nice old ladies from there…
have her lipsynch a few numbers then send her home…noone will notice the difference…
especially if the lights are way down low and since the crowds average age will be around
70 thye’ll never notice the difference.
sorry beeny…stop booking dinosaurs.
Interesting.
Hey, you can make fun of Marilyn Maye if you want, but she continues to get rave reviews in NYC and everywhere she plays. Plus she’s got a sharp as heck wit and a bit of a potty mouth. She really transcends her age.
I used to make fun of her, too.
Did a separated at birth one time in the Star with MM and ET. Hey, it was a joke! But the pics looked pretty darn close.
You Don’t Know Beans about Beena!
If you think Beena B.’s only concern is about her booking and lost revenue
then you don’t know Beena. Your loss! BB’s Jardine’s will be just fine with any
of the “regular” world-class jazz talent that she regularly books. Seriously,
bring your out-of-town company, your mama, your daughter, your boo – they’ll
all be blown away and duly impressed with the magic that is Jardine’s on the
Country Club Plaza and the kaleidoscope of talent that forms KC’s jazz scene.
M. Maye is kick-ass strong! Be well, Grand Dame! Peace, Jazz Family – Share
I agree. Jardine’s is a Kansas City institution. THE jazz club in town. She will be fine, but it couldn’t be much worse to have something of this magnitude go down the day before a series of sold out shows.
If Kansas City jazz aficionados truly want to show their support for live local jazz, they’ll make their way to Jardine’s over the next five days!
