Greg, I mean, I’m all for the HC being ultimately responsible for the wins and losses but what the hell is up with Chuck Long and Carl Torbush??? I always thought good HC’s surrounded themselves with talented coordinators and that (usually) would translate to wins? Are Long and Torbush really that bad or is Gill’s tone just killing everything?
I gotta think it’s all equally shared between a)crappy players, b)just bad leadership from Gill that doesn’t call for toughness and c)piss poor assistant work.

GH: It all falls on the head coach — always has, always will. Long and Torbush have enough wins as coordinators on their resumes to be considered legit. (Although this stop in Lawrence will require some explaining come interview time). I would love to hook both of these guys up to a lie detector and play 20 questions about Gill’s program.

Wow, it’s $10 mil? Is he really inked for five years? I just figured it was 6 yrs @ 2 per. KU can’t foot that bill with the unfinished football stadium renovations they already have on their plate. No way. Mangino, Perkins and a Gill buyout? What is that like $15 million?!?
KU’s just going to have to take its medicine…and Perkins legacy just went from middle-of-the road to COMPLETE disaster.

guy fired 1000 times)….paterno (there were
calls over the years for his firing)..
maybe gill made a mistake with his rules and they have to change…but he needs time like
alll coaches to try and put something together
after losing so many top notch players.
Of course I am glad to see that ticket prices
for the ku-mu game have plummeted and that
until thing possibly turn around that ku
fans are taking this very personally.
All this drama and bad news couldnt happen to
a more deserving school.

People need to get a grip about Gill. They act as though he shot the high flying Kansas program out of the sky.
This program has been garbage for years, save one year when they went to the Orange Bowl and 1995 when they hit the Aloha Bowl. Aside from that and another aberration in the 1960s or so, this program has been a door mat. People need to be realistic. Kansas will never ever have the sustained success that other major college sports teams have. Anyone who’s delusional to think otherwise just doesn’t have a rudimentary understanding of how college sports work. It’s more unfair and imbalanced than Major League Baseball.
This would be happening with Mangino at the helm. It would be happening with Mack Brown coaching the Jayhawks this year. I’m always amazed that sportswriters don’t understand this dynamic. I can understand fans getting all upset about KU sucking this year, but fans are mostly just people with no insight or grip on reality who don’t have many good things to do with their time or money. But sportswriters are around the game and the program for years with access that few others can obtain. I just don’t get how journalists are treating the Jayhawks this year like the collapse of Notre Dame.
