The $64 million question: which theorist is smarter, me or fellow former Star scribe Jim Fitzpatrick?
OK, OK – I’ll cede the point to Fitz. But what I’m really talking about is which of us will end up being correct where the immediate future of Jason Whitlock is concerned. Me or Fitz? In case you didn’t notice, Fitz column today says Whitlock’s goose is cooked at 18th and Grand. Mine implies it may just be a case of him soaking up vaca days before he reemerges for the Chiefs and Big 12 football and basketball.

“The only scuttlebutt I’ve heard re Whitlock is that he’s on vacation and will come back when the Chiefs’ season starts,” one Star staffer says. “Heck, I think Derek (Donovan) wrote about it on his blog a month or so back.”
Donovan – for the uninitiated – doubles as the newspaper’s readers rep, along with dining, celebrity gossip, entertainment writing and library overlording.
Indeed on June 22, Donovan blogged that, “Jason Whitlock will return,” the headline began. “I’ve had a lot of questions about where Jason Whitlock has been recently. Many readers have wanted to hear his opinions on the Big 12 shakeup, in particular.

I don’t know why it hit a nerve, but the “sending a bill” comment and Hearne’s request for an invoice cracked me up on this otherwise boring and hot July evening.

That’s my guess. Fitz and I have a friendly bet going on this. I say he’s coming back – soon. Fitz says he’s toast. We shall see.
A commenter to Fitz says he was given extra time off based on vaca not taken last year, which is normally not allowed.
If indeed it is a health thing – stapled stomach, death in family, whatever – that would explain why they relaxed the rule.
Hard to rationalize why – like he did for Fox, I guess – the big fella didn’t phone in some sort of commentary on Big 12, KU, etc.
One of the mysteries of life, I suppose.
