Strike up the band: Marilyn Maye’s back in town, tonight through Friday (with Thursday off) at Jardine’s. Our Fabulous Miss M (not to be confused with the Divine, Hawaiian one) knows her way around the great American songbook better than anyone around these days. It’s an education in phrasing, delivery, style and grace that you aren’t gonna see on American Idol. Miss Maye is the real deal.
Working on all of those years on KC club stages, Marilyn has blazed a trail that a number of other local chanteuses have made their own. Check out these boites for vocals from the distaff side:
Monday and Wednesday night this week, Millie Edwards holds court at the Phoenix, 8th and Central. This Wild Woman gets into her more mellow mood when she’s not singing with the quartet. Millie knows a thing or two about putting over a classic, too.
Thursday you can hear Laura Chalk outdoors at the Zona Rosa from 7 to 9. Besides being a talented singer, Laura’s a proud mamma, too– her son Matt is an accomplished sax player and recent high school grad who’s headed to the New School’s Jazz program in the Fall. Maybe her kid will join her on the ZR bandstand–you never know.
Friday night Shay Estes joins
L.P.
Mark Southerland plays tenor sax and other horns. A quick glance at Shay’s web site (shayestes.com) says she’s with Trio ALL at R Bar on Friday. That would make the keyboardist Mark Lowrey.

The calendar I get says Southerland, so I guess she’s with a reed player
L.P.
That’s very possible. When she played R Bar last month, Mark Southerland joined the group.
Glad to see you corrected the article.
