Thumbs Down on the recently announced cancellation of AT THE MOVIES. You know, the bickering critics show that’s seen numerous incarnations of itself since its birth during the 70’s in Chicago as OPENING SOON AT A THEATER NEAR YOU.
The Walt Disney Company, producer of the program, is calling it a wrap after the final telecast on the weekend of August 14th.
According to Disney’s syndication unit, “from a business perspective it became clear this weekly half hour, broadcast syndicated series was no longer sustainable.”
Odd statement at a time when moviegoing is at an all time high!
But honestly I understand their perspective on the show.
For one, there’s now a proliferation of movie review and content programming available all over the spectrum—especially via the internet.
Also the cost of a weekly 30 minute

I wouldn’t think he’ll host the show himself. He’ll probably produce it. But I thought I read somewhere that Ebert now speaks through some sort of a new computer.

Jack you left us wanting more. Tell us about your Roger experience.
Yes Roger is going to produce the show with occasional guest appearances. He now has a machine that can mimic his own voice.

Think he was in town for some Industry fuction when we had him on the old KY-102 show.
Also met him once at ShoWest in Las Vegas and in Chicago where—if memory serves me correctly— he mentioned something about quote whores when I brought up Kansas City.
