I hate the whole thing of creating the caption for the picture. What a waste.

Also want to point out that due to the light staff at newspapers and tv stations that is why much controversial information (like a Hollywood break up) is released over the weekend. Less coverage.

And I LOVE the write a caption feature! If the paper can’t inform me, it can at least make me laugh! So that’s one of the first things I read.

The obits will be heavy on Sundays, because families figure, most people don’t take the paper any more, so their best chance to inform a circle of friends is to run it on Sunday.

So now there is a very annoying CapFed flashing box here on this site, and I hate THAT!

I am all for monetizing this wonderful blog, but please don’t sell flashers. I can’t type when I have to hold up one hand to cover it. It’s like driving into the sunset–blinding.

Let me clarify. I think its a waste for a paper. I mean I get that it actually is a popular feature. If not they wouldn’t be doing it. But what is your target market with that? My guess is just like with crossword puzzles, columns on advice on how to play bridge, what is that one game skudou?, these things attract an older audience. If that is what you are trying to attract and that is what you are telling your advertisers that is your customer base then ok.

But here is a sad fact. Your audience is dying out just as the TV audience for Murder She Wrote died out. So to be viable into today’s market you need to attract a younger growing audience. If not what you are doing is a waste.

If I have a hot dance club the Star is not going to be where I advertise. If I am selling Geritol I’ll give the Star a ring.

Rick,It also seems like all monetary policy is set on Sunday’s(Bear Sterns,AIG Etc..all came down on Sunday’s)…must keep everybody calmer…Banks are almost always taken over by FDIC on Friday nights.
I mean whats more important…KU V. MU…or the collapse of the Wall St.?

Hey, Rick. Don’t assume the caption contest is popular or they wouldn’t be doing it. Lots of things the Star ventures into are experimental in nature – my column for instance 17 years ago. Coulda been a dud (and judging from some of my fans in comments here, apparently it was).
The Star hires a company to survey its readers and measure its success. They do it, as I recall, not more than once or twice a year. Hard to say with cutbacks when last it was done. The caption dealie seems relatively new, so the jury may still be out. Hey they jam Mom 2 Mom down readers throats, too. Hope you don’t assume that’s a winner!

Star is also late to market about the new Tiger Woods spoof satire called Broke Black Golfer. Seems the indy film is in production and Tiger and the management team at IMG are none too happy about it. Will probably go straight to DVD but will make incredible bank.

Hearne appreciate your self depreciating humor. Did I say that right? Anyway funny.

I assumed the caption contest was successful based on the printed response to it. And hey if Tracy likes it, it must be the bomb.

I was just thinking: The Star’s caption contest (i.e., free, reader-generated content in place of real journalism) has gone beyond annoying to angering …

Arthritis in your pooch can be a huge hassle that many people never even think of in senior dogs.
