Greg, I’d be interested in hearing your take on KU’s recruiting for next year. After losing out on Harrison Barnes, we only have one recruit inked in Royce Woolridge…not a top 100 talent. I know Selby’s official is Saturday. Any thoughts on the one subject KU fans don’t want to mention right now?

GH: I think KU is a victim of their own success right now. Competing schools are pointing to Travis Releford, Mario Little, CJ Henry and those talented freshmen seated on the bench and asking recruits if they really want to get into that log jam in Lawrence. Self almost needs a down year in recruiting just to clear some space for 2011. He does need a big man, though. Withey can score but I don’t think he’s even in the same league as Aldrich or Darnell Jackson. Those space eaters are a big reason KU has won 6 conference titles in a row.

Danica Patrick is such a whiny bitch that she gets knocked down a notch based solely on her attitude alone. Martin is playing this well. Look at all the national media exposure he is getting. That is not by accident. If some major program wants him then that makes his asking price even higher. I am sure through his agent he is being told about possibilities that are out there. If K-State doesn’t pony up the cash then he is gone. I think K-State missed the window to get him inked for a modest increase which would have been before the season started.

Both Frank and KSU should take pause…if you are KSU you don’t want to marry yourself to a guy because a good year and good recruiting class or two (right Quinn Snyder and Mark Mangino??)…on the other hand if you are Frank and you think you are getting low-balled, then bounce. I’m as die-hard a K-State fan as there is and I’d be crushed to see Frank go, but at the end of the day this is a business…
One other point regarding Tony Mitchell, the MU recruit…look up his recruiting story. Have a look at where he is playing on his rivlas.com recruiting video they have up. He committed to KSU. Then, something happened, I’ve heard rumors he wouldn’t qualify, I’ve heard his mom thought he rushed in to committing (he started as a 3* and is now a 5*), and I’ve heard his Mom wanted him to play for a black coach (this rumor caught steam I guess b/c the teams on his final list, MU, Georgetown and North Texas? all have black coaches and the guy could have gone about anywhere). NOT saying any of these are true, could just sour grapes from some of the KSU folks I know. Pun intended. Anyways, the guy is a stud and will be great in MU’s system.

It cracks me up when KSU fans wonder why someone like Martin would ever consider leaving a place like Manhattan. Half of the poeple wondering would not live in Manhattan themselves. Jim Colbert doesn’t live in Manhattan. Kevin Kietzman doesn’t live in Manhattan. When you are great at your job, and have many prospects, you have the rare option to live where you want. Bill Self was raised in Oklahoma and Snyder is as folksy as they come. They can deal with the plains states living. It is them. Frank Martin has no roots here, and it is not his style. He is doing a fantastic job. But as great a job as he is doing, the number one team in the country is still right up the road. But he has choices. He is going to exercise those choices.

I can see why KK is so upset about possibly losing Frank Martin. I mean they both handle their jobs the same way,i.e. bullying, violent reactions, out of control, head strong and completely arrogant. I guess you could say that they are one in the same. I actually like Coach Martin, he is definitly entertaining to watch on the sideline. I look forward to the day when he will actually try and strangle a ref. It is funny to listen to KK when he talks about K-State, he is so quick to defend anything and everything about the school. If Frank Martin were anywhere else coaching, KK would be comparing his actions to the likes of Bobby Knight and demanding that he be fired.
