Hovick: Sound vs. Light, the Eternal Struggle…

Do people come to hear the band or see the band? That is the question…

For years as a concert touring lighting designer I argued with audio engineers about our craft.

I’ll admit, sound is not an easy task.

Today…lighting means nearly nothing. Sound is primary. It’s live, and live music means sound. AV is the new lighting. Light the performer like you light them for a performance on a sound stage and you have accomplished THE goal.

When did this site turn into a SYN-AUD-COM Seminar? All due respect to DSS but why not call in Meyer Sound Labs or Clair Brothers for a consult on a project like this?

Larry, interesting article. Can you provide info to us audio nerds on the Midland Sound System components? Also, do you know if any of the acts that have performed there have recorded their shows for live releases? If so were they pleased with the results?

If this site is gonna talk shop then let’s get Roger The Plumber on board. Hey Roger, what’s your opinion on the snap fit no solder plumbing connectors? Also saw a tool on DIY, Cool Tools that does some sort of sonic weld or crimp on connections. That stuff really work?

Best sounding PA/SR system I ever heard was the old Martin modular system, (Supertramp and Dire Straits), and those old nasty Tasco systems are/were perfect for heavy metal, (Ozzy and Motley Crue). No such thing as a one size fits all PA. Can’t run a Cup Car in Formula One. Meyer Sound labs stage monitor systems are the best since the performers can actually hear how good or bad they are playing. That’s a quote from Kevin “Rocky” Holman…monitor man extraodinaire whose also in the plumbing supply business. No disrespect to “Side Phil”. Clair Brothers 12AM systems are a close second.
