short stories are the modern answer, the darwinian adaptation, to our ever-more-hurried pace of life. but the really, really good ones, well, they still slow us down in the way only literature can, don’t they? will definitely check out this year’s o. henry now! thanks!

A couple of years ago I de-accessioned most of the works of fiction in my library. I had firsts, signed firsts, etc…several thousand tomes taking up shelfspace like too many stale fish in a stall. It was a question of space and relevance. I am a constant reader of poetry, lit and artcrit, biography, and cultural history. Fiction is a dead entity in the socio cultural firmament. Its’ demise can be charted with exactitude and ease. Reality is much more interesting.

Thanks for the heads up.
