The following ignores the fact that your crib notes review is absolutely useless for any person looking for insight on whether or not to spend $10 to see this movie (but, hey, it’s not like that’s your job or anything)
Wow…no offense, but it seemed to me that you did not even attempt to pay attention to this movie. I saw a sneak preview of this movie last night and I thought it was good (definitely above-average), but not great. I am, by no means, a fanboy and I understood the plot very easily and everyone I talked to did as well. The fact that you state the spaceship was above Johannesburg for three years shows to me that you went into this movie with a closed mind and cared not enough to pay attention to even the simplest details. The ship was above the city for 20+ years and this point was made (and emphasized) many, many times in the movie. I would even go so far as to say it was critical fact of the film.
I am not usually one to criticize another person’s opinion of a film because everyone’s taste is different, but when you show a complete lack of disregard for getting crucial facts straight, it shows you did not try to enjoy or understand this movie. I guess I expect more from a website that printed an article openly mocking a KC Star critic for falling asleep during Transformers 2.
Oh, and one last thing. I’m sure the “fanboys” you mock every chance you get have the same opinion of critics like you that do not have an open mind for a movie that is outside your preferred taste.

I went to AMC Olathe to see the movie at noon today and agree with Jack. It’s a big letdown especially when you think Peter Jackson was invovled with it. After watching the commercials on TV we were expecting another Close Encounter. But this is crap by comparison.

We went to see District 9 for the midnight show at Westglen and felt ripped off. The movie didn’t deliver what it promised even to us fan gals.
I agree with Jack’s review. Birdman couldn’t possibly have seen the same movie that we saw.

Everyone has an opinion and I usually disagree with anything written by the STAR’s critic.
I’ve listened to Jack’s reviews for years and usually agree with him but have no interest in this movie. Looks dumb. I’ll wait for the DVD and will let you know then.

Hey JACK!! This has nothing to do with the movie. But I’ve always wondered. At 2AM I can go to Wal-Mart, a restaurant, a laundromat, etc. Why aren’t there any 24 hr movie theaters. Years ago I worked a 4-midnight shift and tons of people work non movie playing shifts also. It just seems like a no brainer for some one to come along and have a 24 hr movie theater. Your thoughts?

I enjoyed the film despite some plotholes and the fact that the second half devolved into what was basically an action movie but ‘hard to understand’? How so? Seemed pretty simple to follow to me. The lead actor did an excellent job and the film looked pretty damn good despite the modest budget. Personally, I would give it a solid 3 out of 4 stars.

The reviews from other sites including at the movies have been positive.

Maybe because those folks actually took the time to see it. Judging by his (lack of a real) review, I’m not Jack did.
rick
Possible. Maybe like the Star he fell asleep :)during an event
